The original doom recorded pauses mind you.

To my knowledge, you cannot pause demos. Also IIRC demos do not record pauses because the game state is frozen during a pause -- hence, no actions to record. The demo would completely ignore such a pause as if it never happened.

Was that an answer to if you could pause demos, or if a demo recorded pauses?

Can demos be paused by pressing the pause key like a netgame? Do demos record when the players hit pause, or does it just continue past those?

Just being able to pause and fast forward demos would be awesome as well. (I'm not even going to ask for rewind, since I know that can't easily be done due to the way demos are handled)

In my experience, demos are unable to cross multiple levels anyhow due to some sort of pointer bug, so I don't see how this would be useful until it's fixed.

Ability to resume or save game during a demo replay

I think if you're watching a demo recording, you should be able to resume from any point in the demo and play it. If it's a multiplayer demo, then it would remove the other players, much like if you load a game saved from a multiplayer match alone. The player would watch the demo as normal, and then enter some console command to take over control when he wanted to.

Also just the ability to save the game during a demo recording would be great - this would be useful to be able to resume a multiplayer match from any point, as the savegame could then be distributed to the players and then loaded when the game starts.
Imagine if a long-running coop game suddenly had a player drop due to whatever reason and there weren't any (auto)saves recently - if one player was recording it to a demo, that demo could be used to make a savegame before the player disconnected and then used to resume the game.
