I think if you're watching a demo recording, you should be able to resume from any point in the demo and play it. If it's a multiplayer demo, then it would remove the other players, much like if you load a game saved from a multiplayer match alone. The player would watch the demo as normal, and then enter some console command to take over control when he wanted to.
Also just the ability to save the game during a demo recording would be great - this would be useful to be able to resume a multiplayer match from any point, as the savegame could then be distributed to the players and then loaded when the game starts.
Imagine if a long-running coop game suddenly had a player drop due to whatever reason and there weren't any (auto)saves recently - if one player was recording it to a demo, that demo could be used to make a savegame before the player disconnected and then used to resume the game.
