Okay I posted to this topic and my comment was somehow deleted.

EDIT: Will people stop this already?

But it doesn't matter if the picture is never over 8-bit :p

Then its a good thing ZDoom ain't 32-bit now is it?

by Hirogen2 » Mon Dec 05, 2005 4:55 pm

GIF does not support 32-bit. PNG does. 'Nuff said.

In case it came across as me arguing for JPG screenshot support: I think that would be a waste of time and effort. If I want to have my screenshots in JPG format for posting somewhere, it only takes me a few seconds to convert them. A lossy format for stuff that is saved to you HD (where space and speed is not an issue) seems silly and pointless. Having a good quality original shot seems for better even if I am going to convert it to a JPG for some other purpose.

Sigh...

Is this thread still alive...? :?

OK, same picture made by PSP - one PNG one JPG

JPG = 32.5KB
PNG = 222KB

Obviously quality is an issue, but quite often it doesn't matter. However, in many cases - especially for "images on the web" - a graphic being almost 7 times bigger than the other option is important.

In fact, reducing the picture to a paletised one and saving as a PNG and a GIF still left the JPG as the smallest file.

PNG = 46.8KB
GIF = 47.1KB

*Looks
It's still there.

GIF still has animation, but that's it.

And yay for patents expiring. This should mean more freeware GIF editors.

The patent has expired 2 years ago. And today there's really no need to use Gif anymore. PNG offers the same kind of compression (or better) and is more flexible.

From what I can tell, ZDoom just slaps the doom palette on the image and saves it, even though all the colors in the palette aren't being used.
Could ZDoom check and see what colors are being used and crop unused colors out of the palette? That always seems to bring down sizes for me.

The only advantage GIF has over PNG is animation support (which is what MNG is for).

As for PNG vs. JPG, PNG can use a lossy compression scheme just like JPG and any compliant decoder will still read it fine. Thing is, you need to convert 8-bit images (such as ZDoom screenshots) to true-color for lossy compression to work (so you'd effectively triple the source image size before compressing).

You could always re-save them in Irfanview with a higher compression rating.

Um, I don't have a problem with it...
