I had an Idea of simple scaling all the textures and sprites by 2x, then re-touch, re-draw in textures.
Problem, motivation is lacking, so when I (finally) Finish the initial sprite, I dunno If I want to turn it into something bigger.

Looks pretty decent but...

Yeah, sooner or later, that's always been the problem. A full, well made hi-res sprite replacement set is a major undertaking and no one has had the motivation and the patience to see it through yet. Many have tried. As far as I know, all have failed.

Maybe if we came together and split work in specialties, we could get it done. Since smooth doom, I had a vision of trying to enhance vanilla doom whilst keeping it vanilla. Of course this is one hell of a task, textures though many, not too bad but sprites = hell.

The problem is lack of skilled artists and spriters. Even if you managed to get all the major forum sprite artists on-board, it's still literally a commercial-scale undertaking with 4x the number of pixels required per graphic.

It would be amazing if a batch scaling program were a possibility, with just touchup required afterwards.

As far as I remember, the most skilled hi-res sprite artist so far was thief666. He managed to finish the Zombieman and the Shotgun guy as well, and these turned out to be awesome. I just wish he could do the Heavy Chaingun Dude as well...too bad he didn't finish what he started...

@Nevander: Might as well just use HQ2X or something then. Batch upscaling isn't the issue (GIMP, ImageMagick, etc), it's manually retouching all the detail that no one wants to touch.
