Dynamic Fog for Wads? / Atmospheric Wads?

Post by Naitguolf »

Hi!

I really want to play DooM as Atmospheric as can be. Like using dark_doom, flashlight, etc. Now, is there any mod that add dynamic fog to maps? I really love (but not quite sure if could be possible) to have that kind of fog on normal maps applying something like random:

Also some fog like Silent Hill 2 (fog that moves that's it)

Is there any wad that do that? Thanks!

By the way, this is the usual configuration I'm playing, truly it turns DooM into a very scary experience!! Please, share if you have something to add (like random rain, storm, etc)

That's quite the modlist you've got there, lol. I'll need to try it out (minus the spanish). Is it actually playable on the larger, action-packed maps instead of just the slower easier ones? I imagine being so dark might get difficult.

As for your question, it should be theoretically possible to add fog, it's just a question of writing the appropriate ACS code and making it look good. Maybe it could be black "fog" inside for darkness, with some rolling steam, and grey fog outside under sky ceilings? . I'd take a shot at it, but I'm slammed with school.

Dark_doom_black plays better with maps you already know, lite version is recommended if you want to play action-packed maps, as black plays wonder on Ultimate DooM, as is easy and you know where to go. Also seems nice to play without autorun on easy maps to play more a survival horror. But thats your taste and mood!

Oblige is nice if you want to play fast an unkown map, and due vanilla nature with no other wad conflict.

Also, dark_mod and flashlight are very nice adition to Ultimate Alien DooM and Colonial Marines mods!!!

I'd like to bump as i would love to see if something like this could be made, it sounded simple enough but i dont know squat... but Caligari_87 made it sound like a cake walk lol

But with a quick look up it seems like it can be done with Sector_SetFade and Sector_SetColor but i doubt its similar to the traveling fog/mist effect in Silent Hill.

Hell i'd love to see more atmospheric mods, like thunder/rain/snow to be usable in all maps. Maybe the thunder can be used from Hexen?

About a year ago, I made a tutorial on how to add fog to a map for ZDoom/GZDoom.
Might come in handy.

Now that's a place full of useful resources. Thanks for sharing your personal list Naitguolf (and also point each mod link), and for your tutorial Kappes Buur.

Thank you for your tutorial Kappes.

But do you know if its possible to add this into a stock maps? The idea is to have as much as possible effects that works with just loading a normal map. :)

No, most of these require editing the level somewhat. You could using ACS to set certain sectors to "foggy", or to spawn fake fog cloud actors, but the nice-looking cooler effects would required hand-editing.

I understand. But, for example, fog could be spawn: sectors with water. Or sectors with sky.

There's actually a MAPINFO option that will apply fog to any sector with a sky ceiling. Of course, structures like bridges/flying buttresses and so on end up without fog underneath them.
Wiki wrote: OutsideFog = "<color>" This is like Fade except that the <color> fade is only applied to sectors with a sky ceiling and not all sectors on the map.
