[Request] Enhanced Doom Frontened

Post by Tormentor667 »

First, I am a big fan of ZDL3. I am using it all the time and it's a great thing if you want to play wads or try your own work in progress in a quick and easy way.

Now what I am really missing is a Doom Launcher Frontend that is some kind of a library of all of your wads and projects to browse and play through. E.g. a launcher with a database where you can add wads/pk3s/whatever you have downloaded and where you can add screenshots, author, information, sourceport, maps etc. and also filter stuff like trhat. If possible, the mod could also show the titlepic of a project (if there is one) and all the other fancy information that the owner of this simply has to write/add to the database.

A very good example for functionality and interface is "D-Fend Reloaded" (a DOSBOX frontend, for those who have no idea what I am talking about). This would be a very nice way to sort, archive and play the stuff that you have downloaded from the community. It also needs the same functionality in terms of ports and IWADs that ZDL already has but that goes without saying I guess ;)

Now, how hard is it to realize something like that? And is someone interested in doing something like that? I am sure it would be a very useful thing and as long as it is well-executed, I am sure that everyone would love to use something like that. It's comfortable and it's making mefeel sorted :P

Thanks for reading and let's hope someone is interested in coding this ;)
Cheers,
Dan

That's already a good start but it's not exactly the way I want it :) Take a look at this:
Image
That's directly from D-Fend Reloaded with all the nifty columns that I can sort my games as well as add screenshots and stuff.

I've considered writing something like that before, as I can definitely see the merit in it. Another idea I had for it was some kind of idgames browser, in which you could browse/download wads from idgames which would automatically be put in the right folder and added to your wad library, ready to launch :)

Of course I am kinda busy with SLADE amongst a lot of other stuff, but the idea definitely is tempting :P (and would provide a nice opportunity for me to play around with Qt)

As long as it works :)

@sirjuddington - If you plan to start with that anytime soon, let me know, I would like to help you as much as possible with that - testing, ideas, whatever you want :)

Well, Bio Hazard is now still working on ZDL v4.0, but I'm not sure if it is really enhanced. I think it's only ZDL with new things thrown up there.

ZDL is a simple and quick launcher with only necessary features that makes working easy. I doubt that Bio will incorporate all these special things I requested.

However, a plugin system is planned, so somebody could probably make such a thing.

A launcher with this capability would actually be pretty handy for me, as I tend not to replay .WADs, so my first stop when starting something new is to go the archive frontend of Doomworld and see what catches my interest.

This is exactly the reason why I would like a frontend with a general database function
