Super Mastermind draft

Post by LilWhiteMouse »

http://home.midmaine.com/~lilwhitemo/super2.zip

Only has two basic attacks, dual chainguns and the plasma cannon. While on the base, the brain is constantly regenerated. Not fast enough that it's impossible to kill, but it'll make things easier if you disable the base first. When disabled, the brain hops off and drags itself along. The death is admittedly crude, but I'm not a pixel artist.

HP/Damage are by no means balanced, tune as needed. I've used a number of stock Doom2 resources, so anything that replaces them, will also effect this. The rocket explosion gfx/sounds, and the Spider Mastermind's sounds most notably. Also, I've no idea on bugs. I'll fix anything that turns up if I can.

Well... it's certainly very impressive! I can imagine somebody putting something like that to good use.

Gun on the top looks a bit too crazy for me.

The master of understatement as ever. It's superb. I agree that the gun above the brain looks a little odd from the front angle. I actually thought that it was some sort of floating laser device powering the mastermind until I froze the game and looked at it from side-on (where it looks very cool IMO). However, it's a really cool looking variation of the matermind and the ability to slowly cripple it by taking out one leg at a time works really well. I would like to see the completed version. :yup:

I would most certainly find some way to use this behemoth -- by all means, please, finish it! :D

Might I suggest having the brain portion itself indestructible until you disable the chassis + legs? It would seem a little silly to be able to kill it and still have the frame still marching towards you. Though I'm sure that's just a side effect of its unfinished-ness. ;)

Amazing work, as always!

I used to have ideas about things like this way before i realized people made custom levels and so forth. Anyway I had an idea for a mastermind similar to that. I never learned how to do those things, or I would whip one up for ya all, but my idea basically pertained to the idea that the demons were more crude in their use of technology. For example my idea would be to give the mastermind some kind of implants around his facial area where his eyes would be cybernetic and shoot out lasers. And the chaingun he had would be a bit bigger, but the double chaingun is nice. Maybe a mini RPG launcher on the under carriage would work as well?

I could give someone my ideas if they are interested. I even once had a crazy idea that continued the storyline beyond doom 64, which would ultimately send you to the demon home world where hell is it's own 2 planets with ancestors to the demons seen in doom.

Indeed. I pictured doom demons as more deceptive. Like my idea would completely fool whoever into thinking "Yeah ok a mastermind with 2 chainguns, and fancy metal on its face..", then of course the thing would shoot that laser out from its eyes, and make them think up another strategy on the fly. I even had a similar idea for a super cyberdemon, except give him a chest plate, a cybernetically rebuilt right arm, an eye implant with of course laser functionality, and from seeing other weapons mods people have done, give him a dual launcher where he can either fire nukes or standard rockets at you. Of course this would be for all intents and purposes to make him less likely for you to want to get near him., cause his melee would be significantly stronger, but his dual launcher has a wider radius as well. He could also keep you at bay with his laser eye.

I don't know about that... I think that would be a neat little surprise for anyone who goes for the "quick decapitation" approach. :P

It's even funnier when you kill the main brain, but not the gun on top or the base. Then you get a still-mobile base with a floating cannon firing at you! :p
All in all though, it's a really spiffy concept, and it's funny to watch one "set up" when you summon it. You should make it so that when all six legs are destroyed, the whole top unit crashes to the ground, blowing the legs off. Would give it some more 'wow' factor.

Now there's an idea. I wonder who could make a monster like that. ;)

I'd pass the original smm brain over this one so it isn't noted that comes from the model pack.

Interesting concept though I can't seem to summon the whole guy at once! Just the carriage and legs, brain and laser seperately....
