[WIP+Releases] 30 years later.../Blakes7/MagicTest

Post by Kilkakon »

UPDATE: Nobody except Xaser seems to like posting in my thread! So I'm going to change the topic to lure you in and give Xaser a break! Anyway, the major status of this project is that I have asked if anybody would consider becoming a mapper with currently no takers. I have also released some minimods that are pretty interesting and asked for comments. :)

Anyway please post something people as I don't like having to bump my own threads.

Story
It was 30 years after that demonic holocaust that changed the world forever. The whole world was on the brink of extinction, as even we turned against ourselves as the war continued. We were saved by the actions of a true legend, a hero, which fought to the centre of the demonic invasion and destroyed it forever. Humanity rebuilt the Earth, but unfortunately never learnt their lesson when it came to these attacks. History became legend, and the hero that saved the Earth was forgotten.

Alas, humanity only had 30 years before disaster would strike again. A terrible holocaust was coming; far greater than anything that has ever come before. Despite the experience of a previous war, government authorities would be no match for the incoming terror. Will another hero rise? Will there be another unlikely saviour for all of humanity?

Follow the journey of Mr. James and Kay Lotus as they fight against this colossal terror. Save cities from attack. Fight in intergalactic battles. Delve deeper into the mysterious Anomaly that is the key to understanding everything. And will you side with these demons or destroy the source of the invasion once and for all?

Planned Features
  • Light-hearted, tongue-in-cheek style graphics and story. Aims for good game play and some fun on top.
  • Episode length campaign, with branching levels to increase replayability.
  • 7 stylish and unusual weapons, with melee and reloading capability.
  • Two player classes with different starting weapons and playing styles.
  • A large variety of new and enhanced enemies.
  • New and unusual inventory items such as adrenaline shots, field surgery kits and thermal imaging.
  • A morale system that influences the music.
  • Map scripts that randomise the campaign so no play through will be the same (without a lot of luck).
  • This will be an IWAD.
Progress
  • All DECORATE code complete.
  • All models complete.
  • Model animation has just commenced.
  • GUI mostly complete.
  • 2 simple maps have been completed so far.
  • Music composition is currently paused.
  • Sound recording is yet to be commenced.
Screenshots
The following screenshots are developmental. For example, they have my dodgy MSPaint job for the SMG and not the model yet, and use the Strife torpedo explosion in a few places. The best that I can do for now without spoiling anything, hope that you enjoy. ():)

Well, you have actually shown some interesting stuff. I wish EVERYONE who had ZDoom editing knowledge to this degree would pop up on the forums. I like that hud, it's all... original, and stuff.

And the models are pretty good, actually. They have a style to them. I wouldn't set my eyes on an IWAD at this point, just make a few levels with your custom assets, and expand it later if you want. Don't overwhelm yourself.

Thanks for the interest people. I pray that you will all enjoy it when it comes out, whenever that is.

Wise advice! I understand that it takes a lot of effort to pull one off. This wad as just a weapons and enemies set but the more I added, expecting it to go very badly, the better it got! So we decided to go for it and make it an IWAD. To be honest, the only thing that wasn't replaced was the maps themselves!

I think that it might be a nice idea to make a demo of just the skrimish or maybe a few campaign maps. Makes things a little more achieveable and gets something playable to you people sooner. To be honest I am not very good at mapping (okay but nothing revolutionary) but what do you people think? ():)

Hehe, something about Mr. James reminds me of a certain Matrix character. But which one? Ah, screw it. Ignorance is bliss.

Cool renders though. And suspense. Keep it up. ;P

So are Mr. James Render and Ms. Kay Lotus Render related in some way?

No, although they do both have the .blend extension... So who knows?

Nah they aren't, as they only first meet in MAP02, and stick together for mutual survival reasons.

At last more 3D modellers! Welcome to the club, mate. This looks darn interesting.

Share moar pics, pretty please. I can't see much of the game itself from those. Is the 3d models actually 3d in game or rendered as sprites? Just asking, because they look pretty hi-poly for GZDoom.

Yeah! It's really helpful to use as well. Turning it on before a corner is sometimes a lifesaver! :D I sometimes just play normally with it on, and the ammo display as well if I'm worried about my morale.
Hasuak wrote:At last more 3D modellers! Welcome to the club, mate.
Ah sorry, I am not the modeller. It's been a personal frustation for me for a long time, as it's the only thing that I am not really able to do. I paid a subcontractor to get these done. :) Thanks for your warm welcome regardless. :D
Hasuak wrote:Is the 3d models actually 3d in game or rendered as sprites? Just asking, because they look pretty hi-poly for GZDoom.
These will be rendered as sprites yes. It's intended for ZDoom primarily since I keep finding bugs and the nice developers fix them. I managed to monopolise a SVN version with bugs that I found in this project. :)
Hasuak wrote:Share moar pics, pretty please. I can't see much of the game itself from those.
Sadly, as we have only started animation, I don't have any of the models ingame yet. And since I have only done a few underdetailed maps I can't show you them either! :(

How about the arsenal? Below is all the weapons in the game, and an ammo. Left to right, going down: Multiplasma, Plasma Gun, Alien Plasma Gun, Compact Personal Weapon, Micro-Grenade Launcher, Fire Extinguisher, Syringe, Syringe Ammo.

Enjoy. :)

Hey everyone, lately I've been playing with particles in Max and trying to get some nice fires. Here's some pictures of my progress:

What do you think? I think that they are nice. :)

Additive fires would look better, as would not using particles and making your own in their stead. :P

I have tried Additive transperancy but it didn't make them look good at all... on bright maps they show as pure yellow. :S I may try doubling their res and using scale again, although with the ANIMDEFS warping you need to have a huge border around them to stop it wrapping so it means that they would be about 512x512 per frame.

And this is my third fire now. :) Here's the progressive fires:

I'm happy to tweak them in Max but my modelling skills are basic so I wouldn't be able to model actual flames sadly.

Update:

"So where is this at" you people may be asking? Well to be honest there hasn't been a great deal of progress that's newsworthy. The animator has a full time job and is having trouble getting time to rig things and the modeller went on holidays. :D And to be honest, the mod is at a stage where I can't really do too much more to it. I'm a DECORATE/codey person and love that whole side of things but when it comes to maps, I'm not really that good or inspired about it. :( What's also true is that I always have two projects going at the same time so when one is being a little slow I can work on the other one. :)

As a bit of a reward for your patience, I have decided to give you guys some cheap fun. These are two different weaponsets that I made for fun (one is quite old but good and the other is cheap and nasty) that are fun for a few hours or so. Just remember that these aren't this project at all, although they use a similiar DECORATE style.

Just drag and drop onto Zdoom.exe, Doom or Doom2, there are some readmes if you like reading them.

What is something that I would like to ask is if there would be anybody who would consider making some maps for me. I've got a map list sorted out so if anybody is interested, please PM me or post here so we can work it out. ():)

Thanks everyone and I hope that you enjoy the minimods. They are betae but hey they are playable enough. :)
