[98] Bug: Shouldn't be able to "Walk Over" Holo De

Post by Deathlike2 »

Those guys in cloaks at the Temple of the Oracle (area 12).. they should be physical manifestations (actual objects you can bump into)... they are currently like ghosts (like the Specters). You can only shoot them with certain weapons (they should be able to be killed with practically any weapon anyhow).
This is an old bug that hasn't gotten fixed yet (it may have been lost in the bug post).

These cloaked guys are supposed to be solid instead of "ghosts" that they are now...

Edit: This is a bug. Moderator, please move it to the Strife Bugs forum.

Hmm, I wonder why:

Code: Select all

	PROP_RadiusFixed (6)
	PROP_HeightFixed (6)

Deathlike, these things are NOT solid objects. They are holograms projected by a small device. Try shooting at their bases.

Oh.. my bad.. I see what he means now. I didn't get it initially simply because I disabled autoaim in ZDoom whereas is in Strife.. it is enforced.

Never mind then.. this isn't a bug.

Well, I looked into this further...

There obviously is a holographic device that shows the "cloaked guy". The object is obviously is very small and on the ground. That's clear.

However, there is a problem..

In Strife, if you are generally at the same floor level as the device, you "bump into it" like any solid object.

In ZDoom [98], you can "walk over the device" all the time which is totally incorrect. It is "too easy" to walk over (think of it like a slightly taller platform), and this shouldn't be the case.

The only time you can "go through" the image is when you jump over the device or use the higher level (the same height the carpet is on) and "run" over the image/device.

I'll rename the thread title to represent what the actual bug is.

It's not clearly wrong: The original behaviour is because actors are infinitely tall in the original, which can be turned on in compatability options.

[not a bug], methinks

It's definately a bug. Let me quote what I said in the GZDoom forums.

You don't seem to grasp the how the device works in Strife. Let me requote:
In GZDoom, the hologram (as an extension of the holographic device) is considered a solid object. So when you shoot the hologram, you hit the device. There's supposed to be a separation of the device as a small solid object and the hologram which cannot be hit.
Read the bolded part.

When you hit the device (near the floor), the image is scrambled.
However in GZDoom, when you hit the IMAGE (I turned off autoaim), the image is scrambled.

The only time you can "go through" the image is when you jump over the device or use the higher level (the same height the carpet is on) and "run" over the image/device.
Think of the device as like a "barrel" object in Strife. It's just high enough not to walk over it like the floor, but small enough that you can jump over it. The holographic image is just a ghost (as an extension of the device). It only changes the image as the device takes a hit. GZDoom considers the whole thing as one entire actor/object (whatever) instead of a something along the lines of a barrel (device) with a ghost image attached to it. I hope you understand what I'm talking about. You CAN jump over this device. That's why there is the problem.
Enabling the compatibility option makes this behavior that GZDoom does (which is wrong anyway)

In ZDoom, the object seems like a very, very small object or a slightly taller surface. The object in question is supposed to be more like the Strife "barrel" in my reference. You can jump over it. The object itself is NOT an actor. The object is like those barrels in Strife. You can walk on them like a surface after jumping onto them. You can jump over them. Hopefully you understand what I'm saying. Try it out yourself in the original Strife. You will see what I mean.

That's great. Why do I bother writing a bug report if people don't even try it out for themselves? The sad fact is that I OWN a copy of the original game (have all the patches for it, AND the CD to prove it). I KNOW how this game works (for the most part). What I'm describing to you is EXACTLY what goes on in the game. For the person who "thinks" that this is NOT a bug, have you played the original game (in the age old DOS) and experienced what I've experienced?

I'm very annoyed at the simple fact that you haven't EVEN TESTED the original Strife at least to LOOK at my claims.

I've explained it to the best of my ability. The simple fact that the guy doesn't KNOW how the holographic device works on the original game to inevitably get my post in the GZDoom locked up is "great".

It's unbelievable. I'll tell you that much.

Yes, I own the original Strife, and yes, you cannot walk over the Kneeling Guy. But then again, you also cannot jump over any other object. ZDoom has a Z-Shader. Live with it, or turn on "Actors are Infinitely Tall" In any case, I think solid holograms are stupid. Not a bug.

As I said earlier, consider the hologram device like a heavily modified barrel. You CAN jump on and over them. If it were considered an actor, THEN it would be different, but that is not the case. If the device originally was an actor, it would definately react like an actor, would it not? Barrels block you from moving forward. This device does the same. Barrels can be jumped on and over. This device does the same. Barrels can be destroyed. This device and does the same. Explain to me how this is simliar to an actor? It does not talk. It does not at the very least, return a punch like a peasent. Heck, the sound it makes when you hit is is barrel-like. So, it is an actor?
Not a bug.
It is a bug, but in terms of ZDoom.. I'm not entirely sure it can be just like the original game, but it IS a bug for ZDoom. It should be called an unfixable bug if there is something in ZDoom that prevents it from working like the original.

In other words, for some reason he can't test it. Not that he doesn't want to or just won't. I suspect he's running an XP machine that simply can't run the original Strife. No matter how annoyed you get, if that is the situation he will never test it because he won't be able to.
