Possibly irrelevant puff 2.0.63a

Post by Enjay »

Yeah, yeah, I know current version...

This "problem" appeared with 2.0.63a, and I can't test it with 2.0.96 because it occurs with Warzone_X.wad which only works with 2.0.63a

In fact, it may not even be a problem, I'm only posting this to get an opinion on whether it is likely to still exist with current versions and if it truly is a problem.

The reason I think it could cause a problem is because there was a similar thing some time ago that messed up one of LilWhiteMouse's mods (regarding the puffs made with Hexen elee weapons in Doom).

The problem? Bullet puff type can be dictated by the weapon in use.

Try this:

Load up warzone_x and get all the weapons. Switch to the assault rifle (the one that has an alternative blood splat when it hits an enemy). When you shoot a wall with this weapon, it makes a bullet puff that looks like the normal one, but which is drawn bright. Fire the weapon.

Use MDK to hit a wall. You should notice that it also now uses the fullbright puff from the assault rifle instead of the normal Doom dull puff.

Change to another hitscan weapon using the regular dull puff but do not fire it.

Use MDK - the puff is still bright.

Fire your hitscan weapon (or let a hitscan enemy fire).

Use MDK - the puff is dull.

Change back to the assault rifle, fire, use MDK and the puff is bright again.

IOW's, MDK uses the puff of the last fired hitscan weapon.

Yes, that would be a much shorter way of putting what seems to be happening.

Like I said, I don't really know if this is likey to cause any problems, but when LilWhiteMouse used some Hexen weapons in Doom, it messed up some of the other effects she was using after she had fired one of the Hexen weapons that has a different wall puff.

I suppose it's there to make the puff appear outside Doom. I always thought it was intentional.

I'm fine with it making a Heretic puff in Heretic a Hexen one in Hexen etc and I'm not really concerned about it if it only affects MDK, just if it affects other things. Although, I think it should probably make the default puff for the current game rather than the one for whichever weapon was just fired.

MDK puff usage has changed for the latest versions. It now always uses Doom's bullet puff. The global puff variables responsible for this have been removed since 2.0.90.
