Doom Retexturing

Dear fellow doomers,

once upon a time in September 2003, I posted the textures from the Doom2 Retexturing Project as a doom-compatible WAD. Quite some time passed then and eventually, the files disappeared, and I also changed my vhost name.

After some posts were made in Autumn 2005 (looks like I missed the ones from 2004), I wanted to redo the conversion to Doom, but I found the page originally carrying the texture pack to be offline (read: 404). Eventually, I got a copy of the package in the last corners of the dark internet, and so were able to complete the task, this time taking into account some new features added in 2.0.48-.51, so that the following texture pack can be loaded with any wad, in any order.

So here it is, enjoy it. You will be wanting the "doom_textures_wad.zip" file.
There is also doom_textures_src.zip, which is a copy of the "lost" 20031001_doom2.zip that is mentioned in the history caches of webpages of search engines. I cannot validate its authenticity (md5, etc.) but it seems complete with all the .txt files that you do not find in other packages like the jdoom tex pack.

The textures have been reduced to 8-bit doom-format-texture (no pngs sadly) and 256² flats since that is what standard ZDoom can only handle. I have put a lot of effort in the color conversion, as some textures definitely look better when applied using the Error Diffusion method. However, it looks damn good, even in GL mode.
A few screenshots

Big wish: If someone can get me the also-lost Heretic and Hexen texture packs (originally here, now also 404), I would be most grateful to provide a ZDoom'ified version too. I could not yet find them, not even in the "dark" area of the 'net.
EDIT (again): I have found them. Surprisingly, faster than the Doom ones :p

Do any of the mirrors actually work? It's just that I've tried all of the Europe ones now with not one mirror having the file...

I have just uploaded it, so it may take some time to be distributed to the mirrors. You can try to d/l http://YOURMIRROR.dl.sf.net/sourceforge/zdoom/FILENAME -- if it gives 404, it's not there yet.

The default mirror "osdn.dl.sf.net/sourceforge..." does work, but I would not go for it -- it is the master server AFAICS, so would be rather slow, especially from outside America. (Strange thing: SF does not show the message "this file was uploaded recently and might not be available ...", never mind it, just be patient.)

None of the mirrors on the SF page work...!

Ah, you all beat me to that post. :P

Oh well I'll just try again later.

Judging from the screenshots, these are some wicked looking textures. Hirogen = Win

Keep in mind that all that's done here is taking the jdrp and resize, filter magic and palette reduction. While some textures look better it seems a bit useless imo.

Is this the Heretic texture pack you mean? http://cainx.free.fr/Heretic/Textures/JHTP.rar

Hey Hirogen, I hope you're planning on fixing some bugs, and adding textures that weren't upgraded yet, like the tortured hanging barons, and redwalls. It seems that these are specifically Doom1 textures that are missing. Also some texture offstes/scales are fooked up:

And some liquid flats could use better "retexturing". IIRC Blood looks bad.

Even with error diffusion and being hires they lost A LOT of their natural color due to 8-bits and Doom's damned pallette. And yep, I've noticed that in the above shots.

Not for me.

No, not quite. The original package was named like 2003xxyy_heretic.zip. Even though that file can't really be found anymore, there was a close-to-original package -- remember that the Heretic and Hexen textures had TGA files. I already got those by this time. BTW, who was so braindead to package a pk3 into a rar?
I hope you're planning on fixing some bugs
Hm yeah. Some textures have a funky scaler size (like "40" or "56"; differs from the default "32" or "64"). But that door is truly odd... looks like it needs both different scaling coefficients for X and Y.
and adding textures that weren't upgraded yet
I d/l'ed the 20031001_doom2.zip, which the most recent package with "all textures remade" according to archive copies of http://switch.to/doom2textures . Can you tell exactly which textures are missing?
Fourty Five Meg? No thanks.
I can't help it, people hesitate to download if it's not zip. I can put up a CAB'bed package, which is approx 32 MB if you like that.

Noone's stopping you from adding hicolor to the renderer...

I was downloading it the other day but for just about no reason my download stopped, and I didn't feel like doing it again. Nice looking textures though.

Misunderstanding slipped here :) I meant 8-bits of the textures, not the renderer. Yeah, I'm picky. I still think they lost a lot of colors.

The second shot ellmo posted looks like it might be because the "world units" flag for the texture is not set. Therefore it is being offset by a number of pixels from the original image rather than a proportion of the effective dimension of the texture.

The second shot ellmo shows is about:
DOOM1 has a different texture on SW1BRN1 than DOOM2. I will just have to add this "doom1 deviation" (compared to doom2) to d1hires8.wad and everyone should be happy again.
