massive flickering jerking issue can be caused by vertical sync being off

Post by bimshwel »

I only mention this because it seems to be the default behavior of uzdoom, and when it happened i didn't know WHAT it was, and based on it was worried i would need to stick with older gzdooms for the time being, since lately my computer has an unfortunate overheating problem which i worried would be exacerbated by rapidly moving events like that. but it happened that my computer overheated and shut off anyway while i was running gzdoom and amidst that consumed the ini and reverted gzdoom also to its default settings, which I guess i had not seen in a LONG time, and I experienced the disturbing screen jerking again, and while I was frustrated by that, I realized it meant that whatever caused this was not new and vertical sync seems to be it. I couldn't find any recent remarks on here about vertical sync or disturbing jerkity screen elements and so I have made one. gosh an even longer time ago i could only get a sega genesis emulator to run at a smooth 60 frames per second by turning "vsync" to OFF and never bothered to look up what it was actually for, so I suppose i am glad to see that it actually can do something useful.

I haven't actually been running UZDoom with vsync on, simply because I was interested in frame rates and I forgot to enable it once that was done. Clearly from that, however, it's not causing me a problem - because I haven't noticed anything that really needs correcting.

The reason I usually run with vsync on is because, sometimes, with rapid mouse movements, I can get screen tearing. That's the only real downside I've experienced with vsync set to "off".

Both UZDoom and GZDoom default to "off". I'm not qualified enough to know why that's the best for the default setting (or, to be fair, if it even is).

i presume it was not always the default setting because i have no recollection of ever changing it, because i never knew what it did. Though i suppose the possibility exists that i fiddled with it to see if it did anything back during a time when i had a system with which i could conclude that it did not.

I just tried ZDoom 1.23. vsync was on by default. Then I tried ZDoom 2.8.1 and it was off by default. I don't have any really old versions of GZDoom installed, so I'm not sure if GZDoom ever had it on by default, but it seems like "off" has bee a default for some time at least.

oh very odd, maybe i really did just turn it on by chance. good thing that i did! I also used zandronum before i went to gzdoom but don't believe i made any attempt to migrate settings between them.

Sorry, I just spotted a typo: 1.23 was ON by default (that was the typo - now corrected), not off, 2.8.1 was off though.

ah ha ha! so the possibility exists that I repeatedly copied over old ini files though years ago I might not have had enough problems where I thought that was necessary. I don't at all like the default controls, either. (hypothetically; you need not keep checking on these) how long has space NOT been for resuming after dying? even after i learned to use the mouse and WASD i WAS still using space for using.

VSync is usually off by default because of the input lag and FPS caps, especially on lower-end builds. But on some setups, you really do get nasty screen tearing or jittery movement without it, so keeping it on is a perfectly fine call.
