Sound stopped working

Post by DeathIncarnate »

This has happened before and now happening again:

Previously with GZDoom, sound just randomly stopped working (can't pinpoint what caused it).
The fix at the time was downloading a different version of GZDoom. After some time, I've moved over to UZDoom (Windows-UZDoom-4.14.3-rc1-x64_64) and all was well until a few days ago where the sound stopped working again (again, unable to pinpoint the cause):

I've checked the sound settings and all looks well. I've renamed the uzdoom.ini config (and even backed up and deleted the original) to no avail. I did this in the hopes that a fresh config file would help, but no.
Strangely, renaming the folder seemed to work. Restored the folder name to what it was before and tried only renaming the uzdoom. exe this time. I've renamed it to uzdoom1.exe. Reverting it to uzdoom again brings the problem back.

Has anybody experienced this before? And has there been a better fix for it instead of renaming the .exe?

Check your Windows sound mixer while the game is running. It sounds like the game's system volume (not the in-game volume sliders) is being lowered which Windows will remember the next time the game is run, while different versions (or renaming the exe) will cause Windows to see it as a new application and not restore the old volume setting.

Thank you very much, it worked!
