PAIN ILLUSION (demo)

Post by Avtorske »

A demo for a currently incomplete Doom2 WAD. The full WAD will have about 10 or 12 levels. This demo includes the first level, but six others have been made so far.

Well, it runs, it's functional and it can be completed.
It's definitely on the minimal side of things though.

Thanks for trying it out!

Ach! sorry about that. As I said though, it's only a demo, and there's much more to come from this WAD.
by the way, did the custom music work?
Thank you again!

Nothing to apologise for. :)
I was just commenting that it was minimal - and, by that, I was really referring to the map. It's not much more than one big room with (almost) the same textures throughout, the same lighting and so on. So, it would help if you added some variety there to make it more interesting as you work on it more.

Yes, the music worked, but it also means that you have a 25mb file containing a map that only occupies 12kb of that space (less than 4 if you zip it). Both the title screen and music tracks are far bigger than the map. It's not that big a deal these days but, on seeing a 25mb file, it led me to expect there would be a lot more to the mod. I appreciate that it's a work in progress though.

Sorry for the late response
will probably make the level 1 map a little big bigger. I'm also planning on changing some of the sounds and monster sprites :)
although I am also working on some other Doom 2 projects, PAIN ILLUSION will still be the main thing, and the only non-joke/novelty WAD

Cool. Thanks for the update. Please don't let anything I said put you off. You've obviously got plans for the mod. So, it will be interesting to see how it develops. Most importantly, I hope you enjoy making it.

Hi! I played your demo map and recorded a video of my experience.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1hCLb0m ... 9/view?t=5

I recognize this was just a demo, and I hope seeing other people playing and testing your wad inspires you to keep working on it.

A few key points:
You put some really tough enemies near the player at the start. This forces the player to run away and search for gear to fight them, but this can cause the player to take damage. They might feel it is unfair.
There is a false wall in the level where there should be a door texture. I ran up to the door expecting to hit a solid linedef and press the "use" key to activate it, but I passed through it.
Shooting a switch that can be approached on foot is not a very common action in Doom. If you want the player to shoot a switch, physically separating them from it with a pit or other obstacle will encourage them to shoot it. Even then, their first instinct may not be to shoot it, so you might want to find ways to further telegraph that to the player. My recommendation is just switching the flags on the linedef to allow the player to press "use" on it.
I enjoyed the music!

I recommend looking up mapping tutorials. A YouTube or Google search for "Doom Mapping Tutorial" and a few hours of research will get you a long way.

Watching through a series of videos, like the following will help!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8S_gkH ... we&index=2

If you are just using a WAD editor like SLADE, consider Ultimate Doom Builder for your map editor, and I also recommend learning about pk3s so that you can work out of folders instead of having to pack up everything into a WAD all the time for testing.

Many people think they need to get "good" at making mods/maps before sharing them. This has especially hindered my Doom mapping career because I never stick with things long enough to finish them. Putting your work out there is a great way to motivate yourself and get feedback, and maybe finish a map or two! I am excited to see what you create.
