The Tomb of Frustration - A Tomb of Horrors Inspired Level

Post by QuentinTrembleyIII »

I just finished the first draft of the Tomb of Frustration, a level loosely inspired by the Tomb of Horrors from D&D. Brave ancient tunnels full of tricks, traps, nonsensical geometry, and monsters as you seek the treasure that lies at the end (warning: no treasure may be found at the end of the tomb, because I have not found a good resource pack for it yet).

It was made using Ultimate Doom Builder on GZDoom version g.4.11 (I have not updated as I do not know how to transfer save data between versions, I will once I beat Doom II). Dynamic lighting is not required, but it does make the fire look cool. In addition I use resources from the GOTHICTX resource pack, whose disclaimer I included in the .zip file that I shared via the Google Drive link attached.

Now, as for what feedback I'm looking for, overall level design is a big one. The level is meant to be confusing, disorienting, and maze like; but in a fun way. Feel free to tell me if you really don't like something. Also, I can't decide if I want to use volumetric fog in the exterior or not, so I have included a switch by the start that you can hit to turn it on (though you will need to reload to turn it off, as I can't seem to figure out how to do so with ACS).

The level is balanced for all three tiers of play, but I would recommend going through on a lower level before trying Ultra Violence or Nightmare. It is also set up to allow cooperative play with up to four players in a dungeon-delving party, though I have only doubled the weapon placement so you'll have to pick and choose who gets what.

I updated the .wad based on feedback I received from friends, and fixed a few bugs. I changed the link to go to the new version instead.
