Can't imagine this being intended, but it seems that once the player changes their skin to dark gray (specifically) and starts/restarts the level, the weapon muzzleflashes also change their color, to gray.
They lose their palette, somehow. This may have always been there before the refactor, but, the more you find when messing with these games.

I have no idea who added translation to the weapon sprites, but obviously it cannot be done blanketly for all.
