-=What is this?=-
My newest gameplay mod inspired by those super gory 90's/80's anime OVAs like Guyver and MD Geist, and retro run & gun games like Turrican and Alien Soldier. This is in many ways a project I've been wanting to make for years, but I could never quite get the tone and the gameplay loop I wanted right. You can see in this video one of the earliest iterations of this idea(all the way back in 2016!). Of course, that eventually became the weapon replacement mod "Dude the 4th", since modern Doom sneaked it's way into my list of influences. However, my desire to make a fast paced mod that encapsulates everything I loved about 90's run'n gun games (even though I suck at most of them ) and retro anime never went away. And that brings us here, to the present. This latest iteration is everything I hoped to accomplish and more, thanks in part of course to Melodica, and all the lovely playtesters from Blue Vertigo. As it stands, I consider this my magnum opus, and I hope you will enjoy playing it as much as I enjoyed making it. - Rei
-=Plot=-
In the year 20XX, scientists discover an alien cell on an asteroid that's entered our solar system. Multiple tests are conducted on the bio mass, astonishing the researches with it's vast regenerative capabilities and ability to attach itself to, and control pieces of technology through electric signals. Soon, the government gets involved, with the intent of weaponizing this strange biological anomaly. Project POLARIS is started, aiming to create a giant bio-replicator capable of creating an infinite number of super soldiers using the DNA of the alien cell as a base. However, as soon as the machine goes online, the alien cell quickly bypasses all fail-safes and takes control over the AI, making the newly created mutant soldiers kill humans indiscriminately. A bloody war is waged for a decade, but the mutants keep coming in droves, a never ending army of twisted flesh and metal. Humanity is decimated, and the survivors are driven underground.
Somewhere in an abandoned military bunker... A forgotten warrior lies in stasis. Codenamed "SHURA", this is an earlier attempt at creating a super soldier. A cyborg man imbued with frightening powers, he was ultimately decommissioned for going against the orders of his superiors. His strength is such that he could conquer entire armies by himself, and so the generals chose to deactivate him, in fear of what could happen if he rebelled against their unethical orders.
And now... His stasis chamber is unearthed by the bio-mechanoids, and he is set free. Shura immediately senses the wickedness within these monsters. He retrieves the Ionic Reaver, his powerful energy blade, and slaughters them without much effort. He sets out to find out what's happening, determined to destroy all of the abominations wandering our planet and free humankind.
-=Weapons=-
Spoiler:
Ionic Reaver - Your trusty energy blade. This weapon can cut through shields, and destroy projectiles. You may use it at any time by pressing your alt-fire key.
Burst-shot - Starting weapon. A heavy rifle that fires in bursts of 3 shots, and has great accuracy.
Spread Shot - Shotgun that fires 9 pellets in a squashed hexagonal pattern. Good for close to mid distance.
Starblazer - Heavy double barreled shotgun with an unique mechanism that allows it to fire it's pellets as super heated fireballs. The downside is that the projectiles cannot travel far, however they are able to bounce on hard surfaces.
Machine gun - A heavy rotatory bullet hose that fires several bullets in a wide spread. Great for dealing with mobs of weaker enemies, or stun locking the larger ones. Beware that it liberally consumes ammo.
Fire Mortar - This cannon can fire explosive balls of napalm at short distances. The ensuing explosion will set anything caught in it's blast ablaze, slowly burning to a crisp those stubborn enough to survive the boom. This weapon has self damage, and as such should not be used upclose.
Missile Launcher - For when you don't feel like aiming. This specialized missile weapon has homing capabilities if the trigger is held down. However, it can still fire dumb missiles as well if you tap the attack button. This weapon does not have self damage.
Laser Lance - Energy weapon that fires a powerful javelin that can penetrate both physical and energy shields, on top of ripping straight through weaker enemies. Hold down the attack button to charge the javelin. The longer you charge it, the faster the javelin will travel. At the maximum charge it will behave more or less like a railgun.
Fission Cannon - Armageddon is now in your hands. This nuclear weapon can fire a devastating projectile that irradiates all who come close to it. Once the projectile collides with anything, all irradiated creatures will be annihilated from within. Instantly kills all but the highest echelon of mutants...
-=Enemies=-
Spoiler:
Bio-Mechanoid Soldiers - Like you, they are half human cyborgs, albeit vastly inferior in both durability and combat prowess. They come in 3 flavors: Some armed with the burst shot, others armed with shotguns, and the big one who can fire continuosly.
Salamander - The Polaris attempt at creating the next step in human evolution. These muscular humanoids have metallic bones, some of which protrude out of it's body into razor sharp spikes. They're also agile, and can heat their bodies enough to create small fireballs.
Cyber-hound - Sharp teeth, and powerful cybernetic legs allow these beasts to leap great distances and gnaw their victims in seconds.
Parascum - A fleshy worm-like creature that likes to hide in dark areas. It's body has developed the ability to go almost fully invisible when stalking prey, only showing itself to deliver the killing blow. If harmed during a hunt, they will quickly become invisible again and scurry away, in hopes of throwing off their attacker.
Welder - Large humanoid workers, who's work is to weld and repair various structures to aid the bio-mechanoids. Their welding torches can also spew homing fireballs, or spray short distances with small flaming droplets. Be careful when taking these monsters on up close, as the welding tank on their backs is highly volatile, and prone to explosions, specially when being burned by the Fire Mortar.
Paladin - Part man, part lion, all murderous machine. The Paladin has a grenade launcher attached to it's arm, and it also carries a shield that can be used both for defense, and that can also shoot energy shots. Use the Ionic Reaver or the Laser Lance to break through it's defense.
Terminator - Massive cyborg with an entire arsenal of weapons at it's disposal. Machine gun, plasma bombs and a heavy energy blaster make this giant a force to be reckoned with.
Neuromancer - Polaris created these psychic fiends to act as recon troops, using their superior brains to study human tactics. In combat, they can produce psychic energy shields and fire barrages of plasma continuously to suppress the enemy. Their energy shields however are not indestructible, being able to be destroyed with any weapon, and being particularly weak to the Laser Lance. Once their shield is broken they are stunned for several seconds as their minds struggle to recoup from the psychic whiplash.
Engineer - Along with the welder, they help in the construction of new structures, machines and bases for the biomechanoids. It's arms are replaced with energy tools that can be used as weapons, firing electricity in several directions, quickly saturating the area.
FleshGrowth - A massive, bulbous sack of mutates flesh. Several eyes, bones, arms, and other indescribable, deformed appendages hang from it's body, all punctuated by a massive gaping maw in it's center. The creature can just barely control it's rampant regeneration, and so it resorts to spewing excess flesh in the form of flesh spawns, or boreworms.
Flesh Spawns and Boreworms - The progeny of the Flesh Growth. The Flesh Spawn is a flying flesh bubble that can spew weak projectiles and charge it's target. The bore worms are weak, snake like monstrosities that like to leap at and suck the blood of humans.
Scouts - Air support has unfortunately arrived. The scouts are Bio-mechanoid soldiers riding on flying combat transports. The vehicle is armed with twin lasers that can be fired in quick succession. Stay alert, for even after you down one of these vehicles, the pilot may yet survive the crash.
Flesh wizard - Master of all that is meaty and breathing. The flesh wizard is a disgusting mutant that can best be described as what would happen if a human melted like a wax candle. They are capable of melting into the ground and reforming their bodies at different locations, only to bombard clueless humans with a barrage of Flesh spawn. The Flesh spawn it produces can be shot down mid flight with any weapon, however the Laser Lance is the best option as it can rip straight through them.
Onslaughter - The heaviest unit in the mutant's ranks. Armed with a rocket launcher, a giant hammer, and howitzers on it's shoulders, the Onslaughter is designed to level entire cities and massacre armed vehicles. When dealing with these behemoths it's best to keep your distance, not only to better maneuver around their rockets, but so you can stay out of the range of it's heavy hammer that can send a highly destructive shockwave around itself. Should they lock on to you at any point during the battle (indicated by a warning reticle in front of you), it's best to run for cover as the monster is about to fire it's highly destructive twin howitzers.
Demolisher - Big massive brains on legs, armed with twin machine guns and it's own Fission Cannon. The high generals of the Biomechanoids, answering only to the Polaris itself. They are always surrounded by small drones that protect it with a powerful energy barrier that cannot be pierced or bypassed by any known weapon, not even your Ionic Reaver! In order to damage the Demolisher you must first destroy it's protective drones that float around it's head. Be careful, as the drones themselves can fire lasers at you, all the while the Demolisher showers you with lead. Once exposed, the Demolisher will begin to alternate between it's chainguns and the fission cannon. Good luck.
-=Items=-
Spoiler:
Health and Armor crystals - Each gives 1 point of their respective resource.
Hearts - Your Standard Health pickups. Small hearts heal for 10 points and big hearts heal for 25.
Life Bubble - Extra life! Once you suffer mortal damage in battle, your health will be restored to 100. You can hold 3 at any time.
Health Tank - Permanently extends your health by 50 points and fully restores your shields! Health can be increased up to a maximum of 300 points.
Reinforced Boots - Will protect your feet as long as you have it worn. Standing in damaging floors will slowly reduce your boot points until it fully breaks.
Ammo boxes - You may find these floating mechanical cubes sometimes. Whack them with your sword or any other weapon to make ammo, and other goodies rain! This is the only way to acquire additional Fission Cannon charges.
Defensive Drone (NOT IMPLEMENTED YET) - Will circle around you, offering protection. Will also fire very weak blasters when you attack.
Reaver Overcharger (NOT IMPLEMENTED YET) - Will imbue your sword with extra power for the remainder of the stage! The overcharged Reaver can send flying slash waves when swung.
Armor Overcharger (NOT IMPLEMENTED YET) - Sends your cybernetic body into Overdrive, also called "Avenging Angel mode". While you're overcharged you will be bestowed with enhanced speed and power, and you will be completely impervious to all damage. When the powerup runs out, you will expel the remaining excess energy in the form of a shock wave that stuns enemies.
Ayy nice to see Augur zenith being used here, a really fitting megawad for this, but so far from the video, i fee like the melee is kind of slow, is it intentional?
