News from 11 August 1998

ZDoom for DOS is has been released. Go to the Downloads
section and get it!

Here is the Readme:

This is essentially a bare-bones port of the Win32 version of ZDoom 1.14a
to MS-DOS using DJGPP. It will say it's 1.15 when you run it, but it's
basically 1.14a.

It supports one additional command-line parameter: If you specify -m when
you start the game, you can pick your sound card configuration instead of
being stuck with whatever MIDAS autodetects.

Things that work:
  • Graphics
  • Sound effects
  • Keyboard
  • Mouse
  • MODs in WADs
Things that don't work:
  • Gravis Ultrasound support :-(
  • MIDI and MUS
  • MODs saved as separate files
  • Joystick
  • Network(?)
  • Starting the game in DOS mode or real MS-DOS.
I borrowed BOOM's network code for this, so networking may actually work; I
didn't bother to test it. If you want to try it, refer to the BOOM
documentation for starting network games and follow their directions.

To use this, I highly recommend runnning it from a DOS box under Windows
95/98. I tried runnning it in DOS mode, and it got stuck loading the sounds
during startup. (It might have worked, but I decided to restart after a few
minutes of periodic disk activity with no visible progress being made.)

The source code for this is not available because I'm not happy with it yet.
If you want to help get this working fully under DOS, e-mail me. I am particularly interested in finding a MIDI player that
works with the GUS (PnP), so if you want me to use Allegro, I'm not
interested. I do, however, plan on switching to MikMod for sound once I can
get version 3.0.3 to work with DJGPP. This should fix the problem of it
taking forever to start outside of a DOS box and will also add GUS support
(very important to me, since I have one!).
