[Shadow Warrior] Shareware 1.2 Pre-Installed

Post by sinisterseed »

More like a resource rather than a "project" but anyway, I figured I'd leave this here for those interested in checking out version 1.2 of Shareware SW.

This version comes pre-installed - the only necessary files seem to be the .GRP and the "Music" folder containing the MIDIs. These files originate from a different package, but that one had too much useless extras (more info inside the archive).

It's interesting to spot some differences between Shareware and the full version of the game at this point in time, not only that Shareware used MIDIs, it also used entirely different songs which were more action oriented. This can be observed on the second map.

I do not know if it's legal to distribute modified shareware resources. It sure isn't for Doom. Nevertheless, considering Shadow Warrior is now given away as freeware anyhow - I wonder how much this even matters.

I'm not exactly sure I understand why this would be wrong.

I mean, the installers and everything are already freely available, I'm not seeing why a pre-installed version would be an illegal thing to distribute.

It's a little tricky thing, at least with Doom - not sure how it is with Shadow Warrior or any other 3D Realms Game.

The big thing is - id Software developers did not want people modifying the shareware version of Doom whatsoever - if people did, and started making maps and changes to it, they felt that it would discourage people from buying the full version.

It's never as simple as it seems. "Free of charge" is never "Free to do whatever you want with it". It can be given away for free, and still be under a restrictive license.

The shareware GRP already contains the MIDIs, there's no need to package them separately.

That's very understandable.

Still, in that case then the Sharewares wouldn't be available at all, after all they could just as well be run in DOSBox to install and ditto. If someone is stupid to modify them in such a capacity that it would break the terms of use, well, that's their fault for being that stupid. Like you said, free of charge =/= free to do whatever you want with it.
