Unfamiliar is a mapping project based around re-imagining the original Doom's maps. Some maps are quickly discernible and others have been reworked extensively to the point of only having a handful of recognizable areas. Maps are designed for standalone gameplay, both continuous or pistol starting. Play with GZDoom and the Doom II iwad. Use the hardware renderer, dynamic lights, bloom and the sector light mode set to "Dark" or "Doom" for the best experience. There are two versions available - Ultimate Edition and Classic Edition.
Ultimate Edition makes heavy use of GZDoom's special effects to enhance the visual quality of the environments. There are four episodes - Martian Fury, Frontier of Death, Circles of Hell and The Eternal Everglade.
Classic Edition is more in the vein of traditional Doom mapping and uses entirely vanilla assets (bar the title screen graphics). It is based on a beta build of the mod from 2018 and contains three Episodes - The Martian Massacre, The Corrupted Colony and The Demonic Domain.
After a hiatus development has recommenced and Episode 2 is on its way. Since the levels were all technically completed years ago the bulk of the work will involve fixing the broken tags caused by the switch over from Doom Builder to UDMF and adding a fresh coat of GZDoom paint.
On top of the nine new maps and various tweaks to Episode 1 content, I can say with confidence that Frontier of Death will also come with brightmaps, new sounds, new sprites and lava embers (from Realm667 that may eventually be replaced with properly custom content for the Epiosde 3 release). New music was planned but will instead be saved for Ep3 to avoid any more delays.
I went back and played through both episodes with the new release and I really enjoyed it. I like that the episode 1 levels got some additional polish and I love how episode 2 not only has Hell merging with the tech base but it's also in ruins. It looks and feels like it's been through rough times.
About the only thing I didn't care for was that E2M8 is just E1M8 but with more enemies (I think there were more enemies). There was no Cyberdemon fight. I don't know if a proper E2M8 map wasn't ready for full release or what. However, it's not that big a deal and doesn't really detract from the overall experience, in my opinion.
As said before, I enjoyed it. I look forward to the release of Episode 3. <3

I screwed up with a typo in MAPINFO which is why E1M8 appears in the E2M8 slot. There is indeed a new E2M8 and the issue got fixed the day after release. No matter how much I test and polish stuff something always slips through...

Ah! I'll redownload it then and play it. Thanks for letting me know!
