GZDoom won't start if "Doom Metal vol. 4" is taken off

Post by Not-so Ninja »

So I downloaded this wad file called "Doom Metal vol. 4", and I created a "Skins" folder in GZDoom's and put it in there as instructed.

It worked like a charm, but when I wanted to take it off since map packs with custom soundtrack won't work because of file conflict with it (Well, I assumed anyway), GZDoom can't even run without it.

What should I do?

Some mods I really really love only work with GZDoom (Susie and Ralsei companion, and Smooth DOOM), and I don't like Zandronum, so I'd really appreciate the little help.

(p.s. reinstalling it didn't work)

Could you please be more specific here. Does it crash? Is there any error message?

The game itself afterwards starts up all black and immediately closes, which then shows the error message, but when I put the skins folder with the music mod back again, it works just fine. (Note that there are no other mods or addons with it when I started it up again this time. I just took the skins folder with the music mod in it out and put it on the desktop. Oh, even if the skins folder is kept, but the music mod wad file is taken out, it still occurs.)

Well, I honestly don't know how I can do that since when I tried to copy it to here it just downloads it so... Here's a link of a file sharing site I know with the zip file instead:
https://www20.zippyshare.com/v/l3fdOGNt/file.html

Will this do?

The zippyshare link gives me a "403 forbidden" error.

You should be able to attach the crash report to a post. When you make a post using the full editor button, there should be an "upload attachment" feature towards the bottom of the page.

This crashes in the fluidsynth driver.

What midi soundfont are you using?

I looked into the sound options menu with DOOM II. I assume you're talking about "MIDI device" option? As shown, I'm currently using FluidSynth.

But if you're talking about the one in the "soundfont" folder in the gzdoom folder, it shows "gzdoom.sf2"

(Oh, I forgot to mention these, and I think they are important to know. The version of GZDoom I'm currently using is 4.1.2b in x64 bit, which I downloaded fairly recently. My OS is Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit, with AMD A4-4000 APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics 3.00 GHz as processor, and a 4GB ram.)

We are interested in advanced FluidSynth options mostly. Could you please post your .ini file?

Here it is

It's an unmodded DOOM II .ini file I saved with ZDL 3.2.2.2

These are as little as I can add and the thing still happens

Ok, let me explain what you see.

Thing is, I added both Zandronum and GZDOOM sourceports along with their .wad files as IWADs coming from each of their own directories. (Zandronum and GZDoom have their own separated folders, and both have copies of DOOM and DOOM 2 as IWADs, which means I have 4 .wad files in and 2 sourceports in total in ZDL, assuming the wad files won't work when not in the same folders as the sourceports' they're running with. Since, well, it's convenient for me to just click on what I want instead of manually adding and removing them myself every time I want to change a mod.)

So... This affects the game somehow or is it just me?

Oh, and if this will also somehow affect my game, I kinda just shoved the mods' .pk3 files down on the same folders as their sourceports' rather than having their own neatly-placed folders in them.

I asked for GZDoom .ini file, not ZDL one.

Oh, oops. Right here.

(btw, are .ini and configuration settings pretty much the same?)

I think I figured it out!

The Doom Metal vol. 4 mod only replaces the original soundtrack of the game. Since you told me that this somehow crashes my soundfont, I thought this has also something to do with the MIDI device I'm currently using in the sound menu, so I changed it from FluidSynth to Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth, hoping that the custom maps with custom soundtrack will finally work in this port...

and lo and behold!

IT WORKS!

and they sound the same as they are in Zandronum!

So I wanna say, problem solved, this is enough for me! Thank you guys for at least diagnosing the problem for me, which turned out to be my way to the solution!

So, uh... if you guys have the time, can you tell me why this problem only specifically occurs on FluidSynth and the other one (I think it's GUS)?

Oh, and how can I close this thread now that the problem is gone? (I'm kinda new here... I forgot to tell...)

Now if you'll excuse me, I'll go crazy on Sigil and Eviternity... 8-)

It crashes because CPU you have doesn't support AVX instruction set. The version of FluidSynth shipped with GZDoom requires it for some reason.
