Special effects downloads?

I've been trying to find special effects used in videos such as here (the electricity) and here (the massive multi-colored sparks from their sword clashes).

Would anyone happen to know where I can find these types of effects? I've been searching around, and I've seen them used both in 2D and 3D videos before. Either a download or a video on how to make them will suffice.

One place I've found a good collection is here but I've always wondered how it's done.

Also, check out custom assets for MUGEN. I don't have any links unfortunately, but I bet you could probably find a ton of shape explosions and other graphical effects.
