GZDooM or other source ports for windows vista?

Post by angrymerc29 »

(my apologies if I posted this in the wrong category)

I've recently found my old windows vista computer and after I did a factory reset (due to it having a virus because I was a dumb kid back then -_-) I was wondering what version of GZdoom is compatible with it,as I would love to play doom and maybe some old mods on it for old times sake

Yes, but Windows Vista support is on the chopping block and will likely disappear along with XP support if the toolchains get updated.

Vista is already relegated to "no longer supported" status by Microsoft - it's more than a decade old, and it is not getting updated any further.

If you have an extra Win7 license I strongly recommend upgrading. 7 is easier on resources, and is still being updated. (For now...)

It's really that it costs too much resources to support old operating systems - it's not that Microsoft is trying to force everyone to use Windows 10 (although there's no doubt they'd really prefer it - actually for the same reasons that we here prefer everyone uses GZDoom 3.1.0 or a devbuild, and why older releases never get point release upgrades except in very special cases like the GZDoom 1.8.x/1.9.x series).

Supporting older versions of Windows costs time and money. When something falls out of support status, it's because the developer thinks it's not worth pooling resources into such outdated stuff anymore. It's just too old and you can't get it to do the same things the newer ones can.

For the time being Windows Vista is safe. The current toolchains haven't produced a Win7+ configuration yet.
The bigger issue is that Vista is mainly 32 bit which is far more likely to be discontinued, once it drops below a threshold where support is no longer economical. But that's still a few years off because Microsoft dropped the ball with not offering a 64 bit upgrade when migrating to Windows 10, so there's still far too many 32 bit systems around.
