Finding a writer for a project?

Post by kodi »

I've decided to pause development on the various side projects I've been working on and resume working on this.

I found out that using the scripts and assets it runs on to actually make a game was a lot harder than making the system itself, so right now I really want to find someone to help me with puzzles, plot structure and dialogue. A short adventure no more than hour or so in length (in any style or setting) is the idea for now.

But I've not the faintest idea where I'd look for a person willing and able to do this, so I figured I'd ask you guys for advice. If you yourself are interested in this, if you know someone you think would be, or if you know of some other site or community where I could ask please let me know!

Not exactly what you're going for, but I'm a bit of a hobbyist writer so I could probably give a hand or two.

I'm nowhere near professional, but I can write some pretty absurd stuff. Gimme a call if that's what you're after!

I'd love to write descriptions, dialogue, and such for you, but I'm probably not much good at designing puzzles.

Kodi looks like your in luck here because I love making level puzzles, designing, and writing skills but it depends what type of puzzle do you really want.

I do have lots of puzzles thought up, unfortunately, to use them, you will have to utilize the same level structure for them, otherwise none of them shall work...

@Trusty McLegit
Thanks man!

@cambertian
I think I'm looking for something fairly conventional, as this is my first big project. But thanks for showing interest!

@reactor
I'm sure any cool ideas you have could serve as inspiration. Any puzzle existing puzzle would need to be retailored to fit the SCOOMM interaction system anyway.

@Arctangent, wildweasel and Hellsmith1

Man, you guys are lifesavers. Now I don't know how to plan these things, but I imagine it's a good idea to first produce a short story synopsis from beginning to end. Then one could go into more detail by separating it into scenes/chapters where puzzles, characters, objects, goals, dialogue and environments are specified for each so they're easy for me to keep track of and implement. That's just an idea though, all up to the writer(s).

Do you have any suggestions on how to organize the writing, like who does what and on which platform (like I dunno, pastebin or whatever)?

The grammar in this sentence is questionable enough that I have serious doubts about your readiness for a major writing project. This is one of those cases where I think you should do some works of your own as practice, before trying to sign up for projects that are likely going to demand more than you can deliver at this point.

Kodi, as far as platform, I'd suggest something like Google Docs, either in a document or spreadsheet. A spreadsheet would be useful to keep all the strings for, say, various verb reactions and "no way" messages sorted together per item. A doc would be better for the initial planning and outlining.

Very well then, kodi - here are all the riddles, puzzles and special conditions for most levels other than finding the exit. I had a chat with the boys in the Skype group, and they told me all of them are "codable". Decide which would fit your mod the best, and utilize them in kind.

Level 1: Respond to S.O.S.
Collect all the weapons and backpacks full off ammo from the smuggler at the dockyards and return to the truck (the start of the level)

Level 3: Hoboken Station
Hoboken Station's main gate is closed, the station is powered down. Restore power and gain access to the control center to open the gates and leave Hoboken Station.

Level 5: Feculent
Open both sluice gates and activate the two pumping stations to make the sewage level rise and leave the sewers.

Level 7: Critical bypass
Bossfight level. Defeat the Superdrone and the deadly Ultradrone to pass the level.

Level 8: Opus re-link
Utilize the Thermic Lance to cut thru chainlink fences and get rid of padlocks on doors.

Level 9: Radar raid
The radar needs to be destroyed. Blow up the radar to finish the level.

Level 10: Magma refinery
Destroy the plant, and kill everyone in it - no prisoners, no survivors. Dislodge the magma tubes to flood the facility with hot molten lava and annihilate everyone. Escape thru the roof and the mission will be complited.
Note - programming-wise, this level must ALWAYS have 100% kill ratio upon finishing, as this is the primary directive.

Level 12: Power control
Activate all re-routing switches to align power for the nuclear weapons processing plant and disable security lock-down.

Level 13: Nukage processing
Obtain a backpack nuclear explosive warhead and proceed to the roof where the AniTa members are waiting. Once access is gained to the nuclear weapons storage, a timer will start - security systems activated, the facility will be filled with sarine in 10 minutes.

Level 15: Asteroidz
Asteroid level. Fly thru space avoiding asteroids, nebulas, novas and other nasty space objects, and try to grab as many goodies as possible. The level shall end after 5 minutes.

Level 17: Operation Full Moon
Kara Varthe, and a group of evil Courbée Dominate flunkies escaped to a small nearby village. They have knowledge which they must not share with the rest of the Courbée Dominate. The village has four exits, occassionally the goons will try to make a run for it. This must not be. Do not allow Kara Varthe or any hostine entity to leave the area. The mission will be a success if all enemy units are destroyed before they escape.

Level 20: A lesson in blood
Five priestesses have taken control of the fissure gates in this region. Assassinate all five of them to complite the mission.

Level 23: Triple fork
Not really a puzzle, but rather a special level completion: there are three ways which lead to the finish, the player must choose one, each features different kind of obstacles.

Secret 2: Fissure defense
You're trapped in a location with no apparent exits. There is a way to re-establish a fissure gate, but it'll take 15 minutes. In the meantime, the Courbée Dominate is sending group after group to mince you. Survive all sixteen waves of the assault, and protect the system which is required to establish said fissure gate.

Level 1: Zeal
You're down to 25% health. Find an Artifact of Life (Supercharge sphere) to raise your health back to 100%. The level ends once this condition is met.

Level 2: She walkz thru da nite
Collect an Instant Fissure (Chaos Device) and use it to finish the level.

Level 3: Rampage!!!
Kill 50 enemies to finish the level.

Level 5: Crossroads Catalyst
Find the deceased Twirl's radio transmitter device to make the exit accessible.

Level 13: Planet fall
Asteroid level. A distant planet is dying as its sun is depleting its hydrogene fuel. Re-ignite the dying sun with the Novabomb provided.

Level 14: Your City of Doom
In the kitchen, there's a black cat. Killing it would not be the best move, purr-haps...pet her, and she'll walk thru a small opening at the wall, activating a switch in the floor.
(Shooting near the cat and scare her into the crawlspace also works)
This puzzle can be very hard, so you should give the player some clues what would be the purr-fur-ed course of action!

Level 19: Lost in da Mist
Scientists have opened a fissure gate to a hostile dimension, from where white mist and tons of blood-thirsty creatures arrived and flooded the country. You must rescue the survivors, and use your Anti-matter beam to destroy all generators so the fissure gate will be closed and Earth is saved.

Level 27/28/29 - Tower Power
There is a 10 kilometres high tower, the fissure gate on its top will take you to Purgatory where you can fight the Evil Empress. All passages inside are locked, you have to climb the tower from the outside. While scaling the vertical walls, you better shoot well and accurately, as the fall is gonna be a LONG way down...!

Level 30 - Down
Trial by noise - a background sound is being played constantly in the background. By pushing the right buttons, you need to repeat the same sound.

Secret 1: Keep bleeding
You received a severe artery wound - you must constantly obtain and use health restore items until you can grab an Artifact of Life, which'll heal the wound perpetually.
NOTE: This is very akin to Doom 3 "Nightmare!" difficulty level, except the health loss will NOT stop at 25%.

Secret 4: Star Evil
The star gets larger and brighter until there is no night. Then the fire creatures come to rule you but you defeat them all and bring back the night.
Only Thermal Tazer, Thermal Shok Launcher and Anti-matter beam weapons are effective, other firearms are useless.

Level 4: Take cover!!!
Absolutely no weapons are available here, except the knife. You must find at least 2 firearms to finish the level, while avoiding enemy gunfire and gattling-cannons.

Level 7: The wind thru da keyhole
Find the deceased Thantar's lockpicks to unlock the doors leading to the exit.
NOTE: Lockpick is an inventory item, not a key, and is capable of opening ANY door which requires a key or a keycard.

Leve 9: Institution insanity
There's a crane in the construction area behind the fence, which is mandatory to climb the fence and reach the exit. You must use the PAMR sniper rifle (you can get it legit on the level) and shoot the crane's operating button thru the chainlink fence.

Level 10: Water-wayz-2-go
Water level is rising. Find the way out of the sewers as soon as possible.

Level 16: Frozen to DEATH!!!
Just reach the exit, however, you slowly take damage during the level because of frostbite. Invulnerability Artifact, HAZMAT suit, or warming up by a fire will temporary stop this phenomenon.
NOTE: Using the Zicca Flamethrower to set things in fire will help greatly.
All mechanical weapons are disabled on this level, only energy weapons will work. Running is also disabled.

Level 17: Ice WILL burn...!
The defeat the evil Snow Queen, use your Zicca Flamethrower to melt down her power sources and she'll become vulnerable.
All mechanical weapons are disabled on this level, only energy weapons will work. Running is also disabled.

Level 24: Core of the matter
Use the small music box on the round table to unlock the main passage.
Once arriving to the core, a trap shall activate; in 10 minutes, all passages will be sealed. If you stay inside the core, a hidden switch will be revealed when the passages cave-in, allowing you to defuse the trap and re-open the passages.

Level 25: Missiles flying over your head
Oh noes! The enemy is targeting you with airstrikes! Sounds grim, however, you can use this to your advantage. Stand near locked gates and let the airstrikes open the way for ya!

Secret 4: Cube
Just like in the movie. Some rooms are safe, some has lethal traps. Find the exit, by avoiding the rooms with prime numbers.

Reactor, with respect, I think you might have missed the point of what Kodi's looking for...and this all seems a little too ambitious for something that is supposed to be done in an hour.

I wasn't exactly sure what he is looking for either - he said puzzles, and mentioned scripts and such. Of course he does not need to accomplish ALL of this (it'll give us enough trouble as well), I just lavished all the possible riddles and puzzles I had in mind, and let him decide what exactly he wishes to do :)

Well, what'd probably help is if you checked the link in the first post, which shows a video of what exactly the project is supposed to be (a Doom engine take on a LucasArts style adventure game).
