I'm on Windows 7 Pro 64 bit at the moment but I'm thinking of updating to Windows 10 now that it's been out for a while and has matured a little.
Does anyone have any regrets updating? Are there any nasty compatibility issues? Do you think M$ will deliberately kill off support for Win 7 early to force updating?
I thought I'd ask you guys as the geek-force is strong in this forum.
At first I did have some issues, not being able to bring up fullscreen games after alt-tabbing, and having a critical update not working did leave me a bit sour. But then a fresh reinstall later and all of my issues went away.
Oh and compatability, well I was able to playthrough and complete Jedi Knight without too much of an issue (needed dgvoodoo though), oh and also Windows 10 has been the most stable OS I have used at all. I've had no BSODs compared to the 1 or 2 I got on Windows 7 and earlier.
I'm averagely happy about upgrading to Win 10. I have experienced several issues with my desktop/taskbar freezing which I fixed by right clicking the taskbar. For the record, I did a clean install from scratch so issues with pre-upgrade apps is out of the question. So far I'm liking it. Unfortunately I can no longer play some older games such as Cossacks due to mouse issues. The game is simply too old and there are no patches to fix it.
As for performance...eeeeeh...I have a feeling my old Win 7 was faster. Somehow Win 10 feels slower on high-end machines. Both OS' were on SSD. Could be my imagination. I don't have a lot of programs installed, either, since I try to keep my registry and drives as clean as possible.
I won't touch it to begin with. Endless hardware and compatibility problems, coupled by MS being more shady than ever about the "upgrade" process. If it was good, fine and ready to go, they wouldn't be trying to trick me into installing it via updates.
Here's what a friend of mine had to say about it:
<MageofMystra> windows is apparently shitting the bed because i have a phone plugged in
<MageofMystra> it's not like these things have existed for more than a decade
<MageofMystra> it's shit like this that makes me heavily suspect i've got malware on my computer
<MageofMystra> but joke's on me, because no antivirus will remove windows 10 for me
Aye, I agree to some extent. The whole "forceful updates" is to bring everyone on an equal level. At my school we still have PCs running Windows XP which, imho, is plain ridiculous. Microsoft is still trying to improve Win 10, but it goes slowly because they don't really listen to the community as a whole, or at least not on a big scale. Most of the stuff goes unnoticed. I do hope they improve it in the following years, considering Win 10 will be the last Windows made.
Windows 7 is the best OS post-XP days. Yes, I'm one of those people. If MS could make Windows 11 by combining the best security and performance boosts from Windows 8 and 10, and combine all the things we loved about Windows 7, then they would have one badass OS that would have no good reason not to upgrade to.
The reason why new Windowses suck is because people want a new Windows everytime they don't like the current one. Instead, Microsoft has decided to stick with Win 10 and work only on that one, so instead of forever remaining the crappy Windows it is, it'll slowly improve over time. That's their plan and I sincerely hope they stick with it.
I get the impression that this is not going to happen for a long time, if "ever". The way things are looking, all the rotten eggs are going into the Windows 10 basket.
I am hating the popups I'm getting while on 8. I get that the 10 upgrade is a limited time offer and I should probably take advantage of getting an entire OS for free, but come on.
That said, I am still unsettled by the whole "Microsoft are kind of literally spying on you with this edition of the OS" malarkey.
I don't have anything to hide, so I don't care. What are they gonna learn? My passwords? My secrets? An individual spying on you is far worse because he has a reason and it's most likely destructive or harmful. I'm curious what Microsoft could do with millions of people's information. It's literally just statistics, everything they gather.
Actually no. I was surprised. I was expecting a lot of issues considering the change from Xp to 7 was so incredibly painful with all my audio software. I've ran into 0 issues so far. While it hasn't felt like much of an "upgrade" it hasn't really caused any problems either so I'm satisfied.
I upgraded as soon as I could from Windows 8, but I disabled every spying element they presented to me. It isn't a matter of "having nothing to hide", it has everything to do with "leave me the fuck alone".
I do like Windows 10. Actually upgraded my Windows 7 laptop after about four months and noticed an improvement to boot time.
Not once. The miniPC that updated to Windows 10 that had worse graphics drivers was easy enough to revert to Windows 7 afterward. Plus, that miniPC if I ever find out about a better driver for 10 will still be registered and ready to upgrade again. So nothing lost whatsoever by upgrading it.
it worked just fine on the desktops i had it on, and one of them was an upgrade to 7. i didn't notice any huge issues from the upgrade at all, and the one that had it pre-installed worked fine (okay the desktop was garbage and i returned it back, but that's another story.) however, i had oodles of issues with it on this laptop. driver fuckups and BSODs happened occasionally, though that might be cause this laptop is kind of eh in the first place. i'll probably replace it with something better in the future.
i don't think i had any issues with Windows 10 itself, though. but the forced updates are annoying.
