Nvidia's new GTX 1080 and 1070 GPUs

Oh man! I was getting ready to buy a GTX 970 so I could run the new Doom flawlessly but it looks like I'm going to wait for the GTX 1070. I'm loving the price of that thing compared to other Nvidia cards that are older. I'm gonna make do with my AMD Radeon R9 270X for the time being, it might be able to run the game (not at highest settings) but the upgrade to the 1070 will follow shortly after in June. If you want the 1080, you can get one starting May 27th.

Nvidia announced its new line-up of GPU's last night in Austin, TX.

They pretty much exceeded our wildest expectations, crushing previous performance records with ease.

The GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 were both announced last night, but it’s the 1080 that’s turning heads.

As Nvidia CEO Jen-Hsun Huang's put it, "The GeForce GTX 1080 is almost irresponsible amounts of performance."

The new flagship GPU is more powerful than two GTX 980′s running in SLI. It uses less power, runs more efficiently, and outperforms the beastly Titan X as well.

Crazier still, the cheaper GTX 1070 also outperforms the Titan X.

Built with a 16nm FinFET chip with 8GB of GDDR5X memory, the GTX 1080 outperforms any other graphics card on the market, and promises huge boosts to regular gaming and VR.

The new cards are based on the Pascal architecture rather than today's Maxwell GPU’s and include such features as Ansel—high quality screen-cap tech—Multi-screen projection, VRWorks Audio, VR PhysX, and VR Touch. You can even take 360 degree screenshots in regular games and then view said shots in virtual reality, which is pretty cool.

But what really makes these cards so amazing is their price point. The GTX 1080 is just $599, while the GTX $1070 will be $379. That’s $379 for a card that outperform’s the Titan X, a $1000 GPU.

Founders Editions, which include more overclock headroom and Nvidia's reference design you see in all the glam shots, with higher quality—and some might say "sexier"—materials, cost $699 and $449 respectively.

The one-two punch of price and performance is notable simply because of how aggressive it is.

The last time I can remember seeing this type of move was the introduction of the Nehalem Intel “Core” chips back in 2008, which introduced faster, more power-efficient, and affordable chips than AMD’s offerings. This is when the “i3″ “i5″ and “i7″ chips first came to market.

For several years prior to this, AMD had been giving Intel a run for its money, and Intel’s Pentium line-up was struggling to keep up. Nehalem changed all that.

It's not a direct parallel to what’s going on with Nvidia and AMD graphics chips—Nvidia hasn’t really been struggling or offering lackluster graphics chips the way Intel was with Pentium—but it’s an enormously competitive play on Nvidia's part. Have they caught AMD flat-footed? I’ll be curious to see what that company’s response to such a performance leap on the part of their biggest rival.

In any case, the GTX 1080 launches May 27th. The GTX 1070 will follow shortly after on June 10th. The cards will be available from various Nvidia partners such as MSI and EVGA.

This is great timing, with VR headsets hitting market, and me needing to upgrade my card anyways. There's nothing at all wrong with my GTX 970, but this will be a serious upgrade regardless.

And even if it is - you'll still have a stronk GPU for when your system does kick the bucket.

Interesting. I got a new computer recently and it too has a 960.
I'm sure it won't make too much of a difference. However, I made sure to keep my Doom preorder on the PS4, juuust in case.

What this probably means, the standard quality components/capacitors/fans are only available on this card and the lower tier is going to be fail prone. The "low price equal power" hype. The possible PCCHIPS marketing strategy

Same here, on a GTX 550Ti. I'm in no need for a high end card but the lack of Vulkan support is clearly a problem for me...

Ready for a cheap 1060 to come out, personally. I would love a 1070 but I'm sure I could get by fine with a more budget card, I'd rather not overspend.

My R9 270X can actually run the new Doom at 60 FPS. It stutters a tiny bit here and there and I'm on lower settings, but hell these days low looks like high from older games. That's a benefit of being a 90s gamer. You don't mind the worse graphics as much.

Do the 1080 and 1070 differ significantly in value-for-money? The 1080's price tag seems a wee bit too hefty, but I don't want to regret buying the lesser option a year or two from now.
