MEGA might go down, backup your files.

If it's not ZDoom, it goes here.

MEGA might go down, backup your files.

Post by Xeotroid »

Kim Dotcom posted this on his Twitter:
Mega had to survive without a credit card payment processor for almost 2 years now. The air is getting thin. Backup your Mega files asap.
It probably won't be shut down immediately (if ever), but make sure Mega isn't your only space for files. I should note that Kim isn't involved with Mega anymore and the current owner is a Chinese investor / criminal:
I'm not involved in Mega anymore. Neither in a managing nor in a shareholder capacity. The company has suffered from a hostile takeover by a Chinese investor who is wanted in China for fraud. He used a number of straw-men and businesses to accumulate more and more Mega shares. Recently his shares have been seized by the NZ government. Which means the NZ government is in control. In addition Hollywood has seized all the Megashares in the family trust that was setup for my children. As a result of this and a number of other confidential issues I don't trust Mega anymore. I don't think your data is safe on Mega anymore. But my non-compete clause is running out at the end of the year and I will create a Mega competitor that is completely open source and non-profit, similar to the Wikipedia model. I want to give everyone free, unlimited and encrypted cloud storage with the help of donations from the community to keep things going.

Hmm, I can't say I didn't see something like this coming, these hosting sites have a tendency to turn sour eventually --anyone remember Cnet and Sourceforge?

Oh well, it was nice while it lasted.

would this result in the new managment potentially going through your files and get you in trouble if they feel like it?

I've never downloaded successfully from mega. it's either a white page, or a red herring progress bar that still doesn't give you your file. It's a huge burdenous overhead for the things i've tried to download (like a shader pack that could be easily attachable to a forum for example)

Weird, I never had that problem, even without the browser add-on.

In theory, no. The reason the original MegaUpload got in trouble was that individual files could be discovered like that, so Dotcom and MegaUpload couldn't claim ignorance of anything illegal being uploaded. In fact, they were actively profiting off it with services like MegaVideo which made many user-uploaded videos available for streaming.

The idea behind MEGA in the beginning was that your files would be encrypted upon upload, and can only be retrieved (+decrypted) with your login information, which itself is hashed securely. This way, Dotcom and MEGA couldn't be held responsible for illegal user content because it would be literally impossible for them to see it or give government entities access to it.

Now in actuality, since the company is compromised and has in fact been compromised for a while, there's no way to know if those same security measures are still in place. The "new management" and/or NZ government (and by extension Hollywood and the FBI) has had plenty of time to do any number of shady things with MEGA.

Another one bites the dust...
Well, I'd feel much better if DRD-Team would get back on-line.

What do you mean? Their site and forum is on-line and 90% of software have been updated in the past 2 days.

The old DRD Team file uploading service, which got canned a while ago.
If I recall correctly, someone still has backups for the thing.

Yeah, I was referring to that :) it worked pretty well, and was pretty effective without having to complete a million and two captchas, or registering a false account just to grab something.
Hopefully they shall restore their file hosting service someday.

Guys! I just stumbled across this website. Anyone of you has experiences or opinions?

https://onedrive.live.com

By the look of it, it might be yummy stuff, but I'd say we should still keep looking for more sites in case Mega really goes down.

OneDrive is pretty standard for Windows 10 machines.

I generally do my non-image sharing through DropBox, if I can't be assed to upload it to my own website.
