tolerable size of sprite monsters
what do you think is the maximum size for a custom monster before sprites no longer pass the willing suspension of disbelief. ive heard people complain about how the spidermastermind is too big for a sprite based monster, tho i've not noticed this in play

That really depends on how far away you're monster will be fought. If your monster is so close that its foreshortening isn't being accounted for, then it might look strange. Even larger doom monsters have this problem.

I'd say cyberdemon. Spider mastermind is already kinda out there for me.
Seems that the rotations are much less jarring with taller and more radially symmetrical designs (so something standing straight up rather than, say, a crocodile where you'd see a drastic, sudden change in outline whenever the angle changes).

It also depends on the monster's actions/animations. For example, there's a reason nobody has tried to recreate the Commando from Doom 3 as a sprite enemy yet. He's not much bigger than a Pinky, but pulling off that tentacle animation convincingly with 2D assets would be no mean feat.
