but what dose the z stand for?

The Z stands for its beliefs in a harsh and unforgiving world, refusing to back down or surrender.

I checked the readme of the first public release of ZDoom from 1998, and I didn't see an explanation, so it's probably best to assume that one has never been given and that there's no deeper meaning.

From what I remember, it stands for "randi doesn't want this to get stuck in the middle of a source port list so it can get glazed over so let's make sure it's the last on any list".

The Z doesn't stand for anything.

If that were the case, I should have used "ADoom" so it would be at the top of an alphabetical list. But that could have been confused for Amiga Doom.

i've always read "AASHITTY" in Blum's Wolverine voice ever since seeing it at the beginning of a texture list in dck back in the day

I always thought it was because the Z looks futuristic and zDoom was the future of Doom modding.
