So I heard that Zandro forums is switching to phpBB
I wonder how it's gonna look when they're done setting it up.
To be honest I can't wait to see what they've done with the site.
(Sorry if this post is too irrelevant, just thought you'd like to know)

Good for them, I guess.

I've never been a fan of whatever they were using before, honestly. The mandatory "space" background kind of made my eyes go weird.

I was curious, their forum is phpBB now, which is a good thing.
But the theme and font size they have chosen is attrocious.
It guaratees that will never look at it again, I value my eye sight.

My thoughts:
1) Did not like the old design, it was very 1997
2) Love the new forum software, finally read/unread icons that are easy to distinguish!
3) Love the quote notifications, I wish our forums had that too! Pretty useful
4) That overly-bright Fallout 4-green burns my eyes :S
5) LMAO @ all the broken old tags for spoilers, Youtube videos etc
EDIT: lolwut

Not necessarily. I jumped ship from phpBB a decade ago to SMF, and my only regret is that I didn't do it earlier because it's awesome for administration, and it's relatively easier to updateKappes Buur wrote:I was curious, their forum is phpBB now, which is a good thing.

though SMF's default styles suck and have a hard-edged feeling with gratuitous scrollbars, those are fortunately easily remedied and could be styled after certain phpBBs and UBBs if you'd like.
Hell Zandro before had looked like it used that old popular phpBB2 space theme

Like zdoom.org we've ditched MySQL. phpBB seems to be the only forum software which handles non-MySQL databases well. MyBB was pretty close, but at least for 1.6 I had to redo a portion of the DBAL to get it stable.leileilol wrote:Not necessarily. This reminds me that I've still got that phpBB logo up there...

@Blzut3: Why did you use MyBB to begin with?
Sorry I am just curious, that's all. I remember when it was Skulltag, some people had issues with the forums being phpBB, so it does seem kinda ironic to go back to it now.

I've wondered why it wasn't the ZDoom logo ever since I first browsed the forums.randi wrote:This reminds me that I've still got that phpBB logo up there...

Dat green. But then, that is the base theme color of Zandronum.
Also, the theme itself is more or less a placeholder. Can't use subsilver2 (or based) or any other themes for anything prior to 3.1, so there isn't much choice.
Also, I believe MyBB was chosen as it was the next most featured forum software there was at the time that wasn't phpbb, which also was free. Maybe I shouldn't have influenced the decision. Regrets are regretful.
The spoilers and youtube tags are more or less fixed, however I cannot guarantee spoilers containing double quotes in the title will work. Some quirk that seems it cannot be worked around using the internal BBCode thingy.

Re: So I heard that Zandro forums is switching to phpBB
Exactly the reason you think. That said, even at the time I was personally sure the issues with the Skulltag forum were driven not by phpBB but either some mod being used or bad practices. The last I heard was the way the forums were actually being defaced were through MySQL, but I know you have your own theories. The question I was asking at the time was "why was it only us?" There are a very large number of phpBB forums including this one and DRD Team using phpBB that weren't getting defaced. However, it's hard to convince other people of this when you're coming out of a forum that was randomly deleting threads.Eruanna wrote:@Blzut3: Why did you use MyBB to begin with?
If you look at mitre you can also see that phpBB only had two CVEs in the last 5 years. MyBB has considerably more. Frankly from what I saw of the code trying to fix the DBAL I'm not surprised.
Fast forward a few years and the staff has changed and now there seems to be less fear.
We should really do like the tracker and CSS mod the default theme. Makes upgrading super easy.Dark-Assassin wrote:Also, the theme itself is more or less a placeholder. Can't use subsilver2 (or based) or any other themes for anything prior to 3.1, so there isn't much choice.

When I was hosting it, yes, that's how they were attacked. When I closed off public MySQL connections completely, that put a stop to it.Blzut3 wrote:The last I heard was the way the forums were actually being defaced were through MySQL
I'm going to be frank here. I think that had a lot more to do with the problems than anything else. I trusted the wrong people.Blzut3 wrote:bad practices
One thing I will say - if you have an unstable element (such as someone who isn't trustworthy) in your staff, switching forum software isn't going to make you more secure.

Same here, it's something that always confused me. I'm way too used to it being there now, thoughNevander wrote:I've wondered why it wasn't the ZDoom logo ever since I first browsed the forums.randi wrote:This reminds me that I've still got that phpBB logo up there...
