Dreams/Nightmares about Doom engine games?
Dreams/Nightmares about Doom engine games?
Do you have any dreams/nightmares that involved the Doom engine games? I have a few...
I had a dream in the late 90s about a FPS that looked a lot like Doom, but it was much darker and had ambient sound. The guy on the HUD was a blonde man, the HUD looked similar to the PSX Doom HUD, but it had a slot that showed the selected weapon image like in Wolf 3d, and the weapons looked a lot like Doom. It looked like a typical Doom clone but it was really quite scary as there were sounds of the enemies, and fire crackling (like in Quake), and there was a room that you had to walk off a cliff to get down to the next area, like in many Doom levels, and that must be where they were at, as when you fall into the pit, the player was killed instantly. I woke up upon death, and I always wondered if it was actually a real game or not, because it felt very real.
Another I had was about Heretic. It was a normal dream, but I remember that the Disciple's of D'sparil were in my house! They were chanting and laughing, which was something in the game that always freaked me out. I remember running away and eventually waking up.
And then there was this one, which was about Doom. It was like Doom in real life because I was the marine in the hangar. I remember getting to the part where the green armor is, and being shot out the window, falling outside, and finding a pile of dead bodies, and obviously that woke me up immediately.
Those are the ones I remember most. Share yours! Hopefully others have more interesting ones than mine.

Re: Dreams/Nightmares about Doom engine games?
Not Doom, but in Doom's time (94+) i've dreamt of some flat-colored polygonal vast 3d 640x480 games running at low framerates. Fully textured polygonal 3d wasn't in my dreams!!!
Sadly these games weren't real. and one of those dreams had a similarly flat shaded polygonal 3d (think Brain Age) rendition of Spock, for some reason. I do not believe I unknowingly quantum leaped into interplay's production offices for Secret of Vulcan Fury (which was in production for a long time before being cancelled)

It was brief but one time I dreamt a version of Doom 1 that went through the first three levels of EP1. The color palette was much darker, almost like Hexen, and there were no bright colors in the textures- no blues or greens. The sky also looked like the sky of EP2 but with a orange sky instead of the red sky. The most notable difference was that in place of the BFG9000, was a large black weapon that fired huge black metal bombs that created massive explosions.

One time a decade ago I had a dream that took place partly in a half life level. Otherwise, no. Unless you count semi-abstract hypnagogic imagery in the night from having done a repetitive task for hours during the day (which might as well be mowing lawns as playing games or writing decorate
)

Re: Dreams/Nightmares about Doom engine games?
in 1999 I dreamed of a Quake e1m1 with a projected red cubemap around the slime bridge area, around the time of Geforce256's release
this was made a reality more or less in Darkplaces by 2003, using new extensions found on the Geforce256.
Yes I had a 4 years premonition about rtlights even before the gpl source release and before "Doom" was even announced/quake3's release.
....and now? I hate that look lol

Wow leileilol, these are great! Have you ever tried recreating what you saw in those dreams about the flat-colored polygonal vast 3d games?
This has happened to me as well. I've had dreams where I was making sprites and source code changes to projects, then waking up realizing none of it even happened.kodi wrote:One time a decade ago I had a dream that took place partly in a half life level. That sounds like an interesting weapon. Do you think you could recreate what you saw? I've always tried doing that with my dreams but it doesn't always work out very well. A lot of things can't come out of the mind and onto the real world!SamVision wrote:The most notable difference was that in place of the BFG9000, was a large black weapon that fired huge black metal bombs that created massive explosions.

Doom specific? No, not really... but I had a dream which I could try recreating my house in the Doom engine... It would be too tricky for Doom Builder, cos' I suck at mapping. I could draw a sketch of my house then I'll try my best. However, it is not enough time for that...

I get nightmares related to Doom engines when I get compile errors in Visual Studio.

I often have nightmares, but fun fact (and this is no joke, it really happens) everytime I have a nightmare, I type IDDQD in my dream so I can't die... this is so ridicolous but I promise you guys, this is no lie

Nightmares planted with success!
Dreams/Nightmares about Wolfenstein OK?
I have yet to experience a full nightmare revolving around Doom, but I used to have nightmares about being locked up by the Nazis in Castle Wolfenstein and having to run and gun my way out to freedom. A bit like BJ's dream sequences in the recent games.

Re: Dreams/Nightmares about Doom engine games?
there's hardly any running and gunning in the Wolfenstein dream sequences with how slow B.J. is moving, honestly. kind of lessens their fun factor in The Old Blood, because they never bothered to make him any faster or sturdier to accommodate the maze-like design.
i don't recall any dreams about Doom offhand, at least not from when i was young. i may have had some involving mods recently though, but i can't remember. funny how it didn't cause any nightmares despite the content in the games.

Re: Dreams/Nightmares about Doom engine games?
The remade levels in the dream sequences are much larger in proportion; that's why BJ moves a lot slower. In the original Wolf3D, he actually moves pretty fast.Viscra Maelstrom wrote:there's hardly any running and gunning in the Wolfenstein dream sequences with how slow B.J. is moving, honestly. kind of lessens their fun factor in The Old Blood, because they never bothered to make him any faster or sturdier to accommodate the maze-like design.

I think there was a lot of missed opportunities in The Old Blood. From gameplay to story to level design, it just felt really slapped together.
