Even just looking at the pictures, I am amazed that people are being so negative about this game. I think it looks fantasic, and I remain at least somewhat optimistic about how it plays.

@wildweasel
I'd say those are the people who won't be satisfied if the game isn't a 1:1 copy of the classic games. I've seen a lot of those.
Something that annoys me is when people call the music from the gameplay footage dubstep, which AFAIK it isn't. It also annoys me when people say Doom needs (heavy) metal, because (IMO) the best track from UD is Sign of Evil, which I don't think is any kind of metal.

Yeah, Doom's music was (IMO) at its best when it was being moodier, more sinister. E1M7's song is probably my favorite song in the series.

Re: Doom 4 article on Game Informer
i think the music for the game is fitting. it's the same composer that made TNO and Old Blood's music, and those games were pretty fricking drenched in atmosphere, especially halfway through the second one.
regarding Doom's music being heavy metal, lets take a look at the first episode of the original Doom. E1M1 has a fast-paced track, E1M2 and E1M3 has moody tracks, M4 is more rock-oriented again, M5 is moody, M6 is a bit of a mix of both, M7 is moody, and so is M8. M9 is more rock-y again. out of all the 9 tracks of the game, a whopping 3 tracks are rock-themed, while the next 6 tracks are moody. and i am pretty sure it stays the same throughout the other episodes as well as Doom 2.
basically, those who think Doom is nothing but heavy metal is full of shit. heck, the music isn't even that heavy. what 90s metal band would play E1M9, for example? heavy, fast-pounding music absolutely does not fit in with Doom; that's why people complained about Uac Ultra 2's music-choices.. that's more akin to Serious Sam, honestly, and even then most of the tracks weren't guitar-themed or very annoying to hear. i'm a fan of chaotic and hardcore music, and even i know you can't mix everything with everything.

I'd say that more depends on what kind of gameplay you're going for in a map. If you're going for frantic gameplay, then it works, but most of the time I agree.Viscra Maelstrom wrote:heavy, fast-pounding music absolutely does not fit in with Doom

Thanks for posting this. I still remain cautiously optimistic as I can take or leave most of the stuff they've shown so far.
As for the music, I really wish they'd have gotten Aubrey Hodges back for the soundtrack. To me, PSX Doom and Doom 64 OSTs are the true Doom soundtracks.

Deathmatch and singleplayer play rather differently. Deathmatch has notably slower movement, although this appears to be for the better as a crowded room fully of fast moving players can quickly become a clusterfuck. Singleplayer looks very much like relies on the same Doom aesthetic of you being the fastest thing in the room, playing like a first person robotron with guns.wildweasel wrote:I think it looks fantasic, and I remain at least somewhat optimistic about how it plays.

The music that i heard in the Alpha is very good IMO. Fits the game well and is quite powerful. Doesn't get boring either!

Re: Doom 4 article on Game Informer
it'd make for a poor fit considering the direction the game is going in. it worked in PSX Doom because of the moody lightning, and the game being tuned to fit the control-scheme of the PSX controller. that's not to say i dislike Aubrey's works, though, and i'm absolutely psyched for the anniversary edition of the PSX Doom soundtrack. it's just that it would work if the game took a moodier approach, which it failed at miserably with Doom 3.Kombine wrote:As for the music, I really wish they'd have gotten Aubrey Hodges back for the soundtrack. Wow, really? From what I've seen overall, more people seem to be cheering for the game rather than jeering. If anything, the reception seems to be much more positive than negative.wildweasel wrote:Even just looking at the pictures, I am amazed that people are being so negative about this game. There's always going to be those elitist hipsters who think they know Doom better than the actual Doom community.

I like the upgrade system they put in, it looks amazing. Hell everything they had in the article was amazing. Hell im happy that the pistol returns (hopefully more powerful than the other 3 games)
