need to get a laptop, suggestions?
so i think i'm in need of a laptop for personal reasons. so far i have two candidates, the first one is the Lenovo IdeaPad Z50-75. the specs seem okay (AMD A10-7300, AMD Radeon R6 M255DX, 8 GB RAM and 1 TB HDD), and the other one, Acer Aspire E1-527G, is at the same price, but has Intel Core i5-4200U, AMD Radeon R7 M265 / 2 GB VRAM, 8 GB RAM, 1 TB HDD.
suggestions are welcome. i guess you can use those specific models to compare other laptops have. i need something useful, but i don't need to get e.g. a high-end gaming laptop because that's just stupid.

I've not been hearing good things about Lenovo lately, but I don't have any real sources for this - mostly complaints about preloaded crapware, and durability problems. Acers, on the other hand, I haven't heard too many bad things about them.

All that really proves is that we both have different circles of friends that buy different laptops, I guess. =P
[edit] Oh, and do your research. Read the reviews, especially any 4-star and 2-star reviews (assuming a 5-star scale). The 4-star reviews will be from people who would have given the product a perfect rating except for a few complaints. 2-star reviews are from genuinely dissatisfied customers. Most of the time, 1-star reviews can be ignored, because those tend to be knee-jerk reactions from people who are pissed off over what tends to be a little thing. 5-star reviews can be very easily planted by the company.

SuperFish is a thing.wildweasel wrote:mostly complaints about preloaded crapware
This has been a longtime problem going back to when IBM were producing these in the 90s. They're aware of this and are making quite the buck out of replacement components. The reason why Thinkpads always have had that hard boxy design is for the replacement parts. My ThinkPad some 17 years back only lasted 3 months before its adapter needed replacement, and then it was the faulty mouse nub, the keyboard, the screen... all the while some older Toshiba laptops were still going and still kicking without needing to change out anything.wildweasel wrote:and durability problems
The only real praise i've seen for them lately are "u Can do a GNU Free firmwares!!! Freedom LAPTOP!!! *PRINTS GNU FACE STICKER ON IT* Now Im Truly Free".

They're often reinstall partitions, especially true if they don't have optical drives.

Does the reinstall include the bloatware?

Typically, yes, if my experience with HP has been any indication.xenoxols wrote:Does the reinstall include the bloatware?

Re: need to get a laptop, suggestions?
well, i can't seem to find any information of the 527G at all. i get a bunch of hits on the older 572G though, so i'm not sure what to do in that regard. all the information i can find on 527 is on this local site, which are generally positive, but it's got Windows 8 on it, can be experienced as a little slow, and has a lot of evaluation programs on it. also, it's only in stock at a store i probably can't get to easily, so... blech. guess i'll have to continue looking.
edit: what about Toshiba? the Toshiba Satellite L50-B2FN is one i am able to buy, but it has less RAM and i can't find any information regarding that specific model at all, so i'm a bit err on buying it.

Re: need to get a laptop, suggestions?
after doing some more checking up, i found an Asus laptop, ASUS N550JK-DS558H, that seems to be pretty decent. it's got powerful components, but apparently it suffers from poor battery time and a rubbish display. apparently, the Samsung 870Z5G seems to be better in those regards, with slightly lower performance. are Asus and Samsung laptops generally worth bothering with, though?
