Windows 10
Anyone going upgrade too? I know it's a bit soon yet, but i'm waiting for this, dunno what hours Microsoft will lag everyone with a 3GB download tho, but well it's Win10.

Re: Windows 10
Nope, I see more backwards compatibility issues than advantages. Also it'll probably be horribly buggy on launch.

Win7 is eligible for free upgrade. No idea if you have to do a clean install from it.

I'm going to wait for some more information from non Microsoft shills. I need my computer for work and cannot afford breaking it by a botched upgrade.

My Win7 install at home is rather fresh, so I'll upgrade when it lands.

Re: Windows 10
Synaptics screwed the pooch with their drivers (nice going on those device IDs), and as a result a bunch of people's Keyboard's/Mice aren't working as the entire BUS gets screwed over by the driver... somehow. Not a problem if you're not on a laptop, but then there's likely a couple of other traps lurking with other driver vendors. I'm not using my laptop a lot these days so I'll likely sacrifice that so I can get ahead on service requests I'm inevitably going to receive if nothing is done about that driver.Graf Zahl wrote:I'm going to wait for some more information from non Microsoft shills. Operating System itself is stable and functional in the fast ring. Can't speak for the RTM yet, though.

Nope. Not going to upgrade until I have to. Gonna do the same thing I did when I was on XP, wait for support to end and then upgrade to the next best choice, which will most likely be 10 even though something newer is out. I went to 7 instead of 8.1. I don't want my computer to look like a giant tablet with a tower. I want a desktop OS.

I'm never going to update until they fix their dumb system where all updates and drivers are compulsory with no way to just say "I don't want this driver that breaks my touchpad to be installed". Ridiculous.

Re: Windows 10
Well, I've got my upgrade reserved but I'll wait to see what the stories are like from other people before I do anything.
My computer really needs a clean out and reinstall but it's that age old thing of as well as all the accumulated crap that will be hiding everywhere, the machine is set up with all the stuff that I want in exactly the way that I want it so starting with a clean slate and reinstalling everything that I want will be a pain in the ass as well as a good thing. So, not sure whether to merely upgrade (if it's possible to do so from Win 7) or do a from-scratch install.

You will be asked what kind of upgrade you want to do, one of them is a clean install (optionally asking if you want to format all drives or just the system drive).Enjay wrote:So, not sure whether to merely upgrade (if it's possible to do so from Win 7) or do a from-scratch install.

Re: Windows 10
Blaming Windows for [censored word] drivers not written by Microsoft has long been the bane of the Windows dev team. The major reason Windows bluescreens is because of bad drivers. Of course, rather than the OSX/(most) Linux distro way of controlling the drivers at every level, Windows got as big as it did in part because of their driver model. It's far easier to recover from bad drivers in Windows.JimmyJ wrote:their dumb system where all updates and drivers are compulsory
Not installing OS updates leaves your computer vulnerable to hacking. Plain and simple. If you don't keep up to date, you are potentially contributing to making the Internet a worse place to operate in (this isn't hyperbole, if someone uses an unpatched exploit on your computer without your knowledge for something like a botnet...).

Thanks for the info. Useful to know. All I'll have to do is actually decide which way to go.edward850 wrote:You will be asked what kind of upgrade you want to do, one of them is a clean install (optionally asking if you want to format all drives or just the system drive).
