Overrated and underrated wads/megawads

Post by Veinen »

Pretty much what the title says. You can mention any wad but preferably at least have it be an episode or a series of maps. The categories can also include wads that get too much/little attention in general - even if the technical 'rating' of them is fair for what the wad has on offer.

Some of mine:

Overrated: D2TWID (the first DTWID is fine though), NewDoom Community Project 2 (this is way too buggy first of all), a lot of older wads (particular MM1, Hell Revealed 1, Requiem). MM2 and Alien Vendetta are more enjoyable for me, though.

Underrated: Ultimate Needs More Detail, Beyond Revival (must mention as it's an episode by the same author as UNMD), Revolution!, perhaps Jenesis/Reverie slightly

That's only a start containing ones I can think of quickly; there's probably more that will likely click into mind later.

I will say though that at the moment, in terms of megawads this decade (2010-2015), I think I'd argue little with anything I didn't mention above.

I had problems when bashing what I dislike on this forums the other day, so i'll stick to the second half of the topic.

Underrated wads: Unloved, one Ultimate Doom 2 i remember playing online (I imagine there must be other wads named like this) and GREZZO 2 (yep)

Generally I tend to like vanilla mapsets less and 'not doom any more' mods more than the average person.

I think epic 2 and plutonia 2 are pretty overrated though, and temple of the lizardmen series despite their incohesive content quality should be rated higher.

I didn't like temple of the lizardmen, It's way too straight forward, to the point that you are just running along big corridors killing melee enemies. Not my thing. And believe me, I like linear maps, sandbox maps are also not my thing at all.

To provide a counterargument here, I feel the exact opposite way. D2TWID is a lot more authentic to the source material, and speaking with the bias of someone who was heavily involved in both projects' development, I think it's a lot more fun.

I'm with you there. DTWID was really cool and I enjoyed it loads, but after I had played for long enough I genuinely forgot I wasn't actually playing Doom 2 levels in D2TWID. I remember thinking to myself "Man, I don't quite remember this level" for a WHILE before recalling that I wasn't just running through Doom 2. It was also too much fun for me to stop and think about it.

Uh, yeah. I LOVE the original Epic, and I think Epic 2 had some super rad levels, but it ended up dragging and some of the levels ended up being a real grind. I remember a particular archvile only UFO level that I thought was a claustrophobic bore. The wad as a whole was good and all, but I could go through and chop out quite a few levels with no tears.

I don't like Fragport at all. Or Eternal Doom.

NDCP 2 isn't well respected but I liked it, aside from map02 being broke.
