[MONSTER][WEAPON] Additional Wolf3D Resources

Post by Double(Super)Shotgun »

I'm working on a chaingun that captures the feel of the original Wolfenstein 3D chaingun while updating it a bit. Here's what I have so far, but it needs a lot of work. As you can see, the muzzle flash is just a rip from the Wolf3D chaingun. The wad containing what I have so far for the chaingun can be found here: https://www.dropbox.com/s/gw28o75w9lqws ... g.wad?dl=0

Concept: A simple re-working of the basic Wolfenstein 3D guard. To give full credit, the original base was probably AReyeP's "Spear Resurrection" gray guard, a sprite that apparently combines the slightly-larger, arguably better-drawn white officer's body with the brown guard's head, but the version I directly used as a base was this purple re-coloring.

I'm using this in a personal project for learning the ins and outs of Doom editing, but if anybody wishes to use it, enjoy. Credit as you see fit.

EDIT1: Updated sprite sheet to include original-style firing frames.

This is really cool! Interesting seeing such a huge influx of Wolf3D-related content. I wonder why that is? Either way, awesome job!

The purple guard has badly messed up blood and possibly damaged shading as well. Use Spear End of Destiny's guard as a base instead.

It would be cool to see the firing and death poses matching the original.

I always wondered how come that there were many Doom HD monsters project here on this forum (so far, none of them are completed), but no Wolf3D HD enemies remakes, only Mac sprites. I'd love to see Hans Grösse or General Fettgesicht remastered since Return to castle Wolfenstein came out :)

Could be even awesome to see them inside Blade of Agony :-D

PS: Concerning your supa-dupa story for Tristania 3D, I guess it's really detailed and there's nothing to change in here: it's very detailed and well done, mappers will fly with their fantasy if they'll read it! :-D

Sorry for my reaaaaaallly late reply, but I am quite busy with real life issues and Blade of Agony development.

No problem :) Blade of Agony is so far, perfect, I like the various Nazis inside!
As for oldschool Nazi guards, Spear: End of Destiny has the best I think. There, finally, the SS wear traditional black and don't look like a damn Smurf...

You are right. I've amended the original sprite sheet with an attempt at the firing frames, however IMO the death frames from the original can fit as they are. Maybe could bring down the blueness of the boots some, but I doubt it would distract. I'll take a look though.

Haha, Smurfs right. I've heard some people refer to them as police officers XD I used to really prefer the more realistic versions of everything, but lately I've come full circle into a real admiration and respect for the style of the original Wolf3D. It reminds me of a 80's or 90's comic book, honestly.

Funny you should mention comic books. I believe Id put the SS in blue for a similar reason that comics did it to Batman.

There isn't much in the way of dark grays in the palette, plus I think that Wolf3D was originally going to support a 16 color mode.

Also I "demand" an appropriately black-suited, blue-skinned Wolfensmurf now. :P

That's right, they had planned a lower color version; this is what the title screen was going to look like.

And I was actually thinking the same thing about Batman! Seems like I heard that Spiderman was initially intended to be red and black, not red and blue, so it kind of went the opposite way.

Grouchy Smurf would do a great SS replacement :D
"I hate players!"

When I was young and haven't seen any Smurf episodes, I too am referred them as policemen, especially since cops' uniform was awfully similar to theirs in this country. The officers were declared "postman", and the Mutants were "Frankenstein monsters". As I recall, only the normal Guard retained any soldier-ish meaning.
I wonder why couldn't ID use their original uniforms, if they could use swastikas, Imperial crosses and even Hitler himself. The gray part of the EoD palette is the same with the original Wolf-3D palette's gray part so "not enough colours" is a not good enough reason :P

A lot of original Wolf3D's resources were probably originally drawn in the standard EGA colors (evident in how the Wolf3D palette consists largely of shades and tones of those colors), then later adapted to the extended palette when 16-color support was dropped.

Yes, but even a simple "convert to grayscale" would do the trick, they wouldn't even need to recolor that much...
EGA graphics would do nicely of course, but in much MUCH higher resolution. Take a look at Nightmare on Elm Street...those pictures are very sweet.
