Why does X-men ravages of apocolypse have a bad rep?

For those of you who don't know what it is it's a quake mod that was released commercially back in the day that had an xmen theme to it. For years I've been trying to figure out why it wasn't rated higher. I mean it's definitely not perfect, but it does not deserve a 49 like gamespot gave it. I think it's great and I actually own it.

It's very boring. The level designs are bland and the X-Clone enemies don't vary a lot and tend to be bullet sponges. The CD soundtrack is also horribly unfitting.

The artwork is nice though and the mutant multiplayer was kind of fun, but that's all it has going for it to me. Frankly, it's still not a lot of retail value.

If you want a decent retail Quake TC from 1997, Malice already had set that bar.

I also own Malice. While I love Malice I find it way too difficult. Everything looked the same in malice to me so I was never really sure where I was going. I guess I just thought xmen ROA was treated very unfairly back in the day for something that should have been amazing for using the quake engine and making it into something almost completely new. It's not something you see anymore really. Batman doom is the closest thing you'll get to something like it.

Probably because even the developer admits it was horribly rushed to meet a deadline.
