Dark DooM - Horror MODS recopilation for GzDooM

Post by Naitguolf »

Hi.

As I pointed here, http://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=46668 this is usually I play. I made a pack ready to play with GzDooM and Qeffects, only you need to copy your registered Doom1.wad/Doom2.wad/etc... to a directory where you unrar this file. Of course every file can be found as I will point were are available today, but Its nice to have the recopilation here just in case I am adding some things. This probably needs a powerfull machine due hi-res. I also didnd edit anyfile, just the list of wads, and two .bat for running them.

https://mega.co.nz/#!pNow1TCC!Qov8DuX6z ... FjsMbZyK00

This is how I understand how DooM should be: Dark and scary. With no gameplay changes.

Image

GzDooM engine, with Bloom, hi res textures, hi res original sounds, etc.

I've also added a flashlight (bind the key for your desire) and surely you will need it if played with Doom.bat

If you dont like playing so dark, run "doom with luz.bat" (but the point is to play with doom.bat)

Music is replaced with Music Ambient.

Also includes the best mods to increase the visual: hi res textures, smooth animations... but as I said gameplay is intact.

Usually this works better with vanilla maps, but psxdoom wad is great too! Hope you enjoy it, as much as I.

I want to thank you for your work modders, so is amazing how the game looks like when adding all the stuff. I didnt create any mod here, so please, kudos to them, not me. But if something is wrong, please dont disturb them, I made the faults.

Includes the following mods:

Why footsteps? I figure that was never very Doomy to begin with and just gets annoying after a while.

Its add tension. Just dont load it if you dont like on bat file footstepsv4.pk3. Anyway, the sound is very quiet. Remeber this recopilation tries to add more tension to original GzDooM, trying not to change the gameplay.

I find it hard to be tense while carrying a BFG9000. Or any of dooms weapons beside the fist without berserk. Really, while this is cool; doom just isn't a horror game. It's impossible to feel scared when you are so powerful, and know exactly what you are dealing with.

Horror is very subjective, honestly. Some people prefer this sort of experience.

I understand, but for me at least, this just makes it look better instead of being scary.

I remember I made an older version of Brutalized Hardcore (Now known as Maps of Chaos) and gave episode 1 the dark (and I mean dark!), moody environment that would work like this.

Well, if you are on mood, you can try to play E2M6. Thtat map, to me, is very scary. And with some dark, the flashlight, the brightmaps... whoa :)

Also, hope you guys can recommend wads that plays great this this! Slaughter maps probably dont work. Of course, something beign scary is very subjetive. Usually I play with this by night, with earphones, alone. Revisiting old maps you know with this is an excelent experience. At last, to me, that I want to share. Expecially with Episodes 1,2 and 3.

Multiple problems: Footsteps don't seem to be working, and I also am having some bizarre issues with the main fullscreen HUD:

Seems footstepsv4 has some issues (please, go to the topic of the mod). Meanwhile try v3 instead.

Those bizzarres issues is because qeffects. Try to tweak QeffectsGL.ini. Or better, try to play the minimun hud, just health and ammo.

Horror action, where you can kill them but there's still a high degree of tension in the air. Like Resident Evil 4. The best kind of horror is where you don't know when something bad is going to happen, it leaves you guessing by having periods of time where nothing is happening and you begin to psych yourself out.

no queffects for os x/linux/bsd, yep? without those effects this game is like shooting in a pitch black room, you don't even now whether you shot anyone or not, no lights from your enemies eyes, lacks atmosphere, one would say.

Use the flashlight! Also with dark_lite, is not too dark. Also, dont count on qeffects, since with new versions of GzDooM, it doesnt work.

At first glance, I was afraid someone might be simply distributing my little lighting script as their own. But then again, it's barely 5 lines long (or somewhere there about). :P Glad to see instead that it has been incorporated into a horror compilation that I must now download and try for myself. I'll offer my input after I've had a chance to soak up the atmosphere. :)
