Death Egg's HD Sprite Project

Post by Death Egg »

I figured I'd toss my hat into the HD sprite ring for a variety of reasons. I've been reading a lot of critique of all the other HD projects that have popped up and failed before beginning this, and have set up a few rules of sorts:

1. Rather than going for 4x the size of the originals, I'm going for 2x, as this is much faster and far less daunting.

2. I am trying to stick to the design of the original monster as closely as possible.

3. I am also sticking to the Doom pallete for these.

4. They'll be freely available for anyone to reuse/edit/etc.

Spoiler: Cyberdemon

I want to know what people think of what I've currently done so far and if this is worth continuing or not.

It looks interesting, the question is how fast can you make them and how long will you stay motivated? Double resolution for items without animation has been done before (there was a Skulltag pack made mostly by Doomjedi for example), but attempts at manually high-resing the monsters always fail because there's just so many sprites to process (5 or 8 rotations x 15 or more frames = over a hundred sprites per monster).

One sprite takes anywhere from an hour and an hour and a half using my method. This is only in the case of monsters though, since the medikit and stimpack only took like 15 minutes each. I'm focusing on the Imp right now instead of the items though so if I do run out of steam there's a chance there will at least be a completed monster instead of just another item HD pack.

Also, I'm sure the larger the monster gets the slower it'll take too. (Not entirely looking forward to the Cyberdemon but I've been contemplating doing him next to get him out of the way, since no one attempts the Cyberdemon.)

This is cool. While 4x or more would be nice, this is much more realistic workload and still looks vastly better than the original sprites. Hopefully with these sprites, combined with the HQ4x filter, sprites will better fit in with the HD texture packs.

looks pretty cool, but could you please do the later monsters first? We all have seen imps, humans and pinky's.

I think his hands needs more detail. Here, I tried to add some more visible knuckles. Also tweaked his right shoulder spikes to look shinier.

Yeah, admittedly, hands are one of my weak points. I'll admit my art talent isn't exactly perfect, so the sprites will likely need some help to perfect.

Yeah, like I said, after I finish the Imp I'm gonna attempt the Cyberdemon next.

I like where this is going. The revised spikes and hands certainly look better, and the basic technique seems to be the right method (finally) for upscaling the sprites.

I like what you've done with them. One minor thing I should note about the fourth frame, is that the original Imp sprites have two fingers and one thumb, while there appear to be three knuckles on the sprite.

For example:

(Then I noticed I messed up myself with his digits on the left hand oops)

EDIT: Finished attacking frames, check OP.

One thing I hate about HD Projects is that they change the design of the sprites. I like what you are doing here!

It's definitely worth continuing. The sprites look a lot better while still retaining the same features as the original.

Most HD sprite projects fail because they try to do too much, this seems like it could go all the way.

Did a bit more work on the spikes, maybe they animate better now. Also used the previous add-ons if that's alright. (I also edited the hand to have two knuckles instead of three)

Edit: Spikes on legs in the firing frames were kinda derpy, that ought to be fixed now.

Spoiler:
Some minor tweaks to the firing frames. (Minor, mind you.)
Edit: Made the head animate better in the walking animation, and tweaked some sprites a bit. (I think it's primarily the first one.)
