Hexen: Wanna love it, but can't

I want to play, and enjoy Hexen. But the weapons just feel too weak, there's not quite enough action, and there's hardly any "OH I'M RIGHT UP IN YO' FACE" melee combat, and more of the "pew pew"..... And not the good kind. I don't have the patience to mod Hexen. Does anyone know of any mods that give the game what it's missing?

Hexcercise and
HexenHanced are the obvious answers.

I actually love the Hexen weapons. With the exception of Silentus. I merely feel there are too few weapons. A couple more weapons for each class would do wonders. In total there's plenty of weapons, but you lose access to the majority of weapons by class selection. And that's fine, but there just aren't enough after that.
I kind of feel they could have spent a weapon slot on flasks and that would have made it feel like there are more weapons.

While not canonically accurate, this is actually an awesome name for some reason. o_O

Oh yeah, the real name is Shutitus of course
I guess now I'll have to add a Silentus sword to my Legend of Grimrock dungeon.

The thing about Hexen is that although there are few "weapons", the game floods you with (usually) extremely powerful artifacts. In my opinion, that more than makes up for it.
Hell, you get enough discs of repulsion and flechettes that they may as well be the fifth and sixth weapons.

Btw Hexehanced works with newest svn.NeuralStunner should unlock his thread and edit first post.

Personally I found artifacts a mostly annoying aspect of the game.

Considering that the last update to the mod was about two years ago, it will probably work with 2.6.1.

That's another thing. Most of the time I just hate that limited weapon crap in each class.

I personally enjoyed the weapons, monsters (though I find fighting Centaurs a bit tedius at times), and overall atmosphere. But I HATE the stock mapsets in vanilla Hexen and Deathkings of the Dark Citadel. They're essentially entirely scour-and-guess switch-hunts spread over entire hubs of maps. I'm way too dumb to be able to crack them in a reasonable manner. Thankfully, there's a few truly excellent custom adventures/mapsets that fit my style much better, which make for a chance to enjoy the game a lot more.

The only time I've beaten Hexen in total was in coop. It's more enjoyable that way, I think. (Although H2 kicks its arse in almost every way.)

HH is dead. Because it was horrible.
There may or may not be a successor in progress. I probably shouldn't say any more.

I really don't understand this complaint. The maps are basically doom or quake, just on a larger scale.
Not to mention that all of the switch-puzzles have somewhere which allows you to track your progress, except for the Seven Portals (I will admit the first hub is just terrible). The rest just needs exploration and actually paying attention to the messages you're given.

Can't say I really see that one, sorry. Doom has a very 'Point A to Point B' layout. Hexen, on the other hand, will have you pull a switch, which changes something in one of the other six levels of the hub, with usually no hints, except for something like 'Stairs have risen' in rare instances. No other discernable connections, or reasons to suspect why one switch affects whatever geographical shifts elsewhere in the hub.
To be fair, though, the majority of my experiences come from Seven Portals, so I may be missing something better in places I didn't see.
