REVENANT

Post by NDgamer00 »

A dark fantasy TC mod with a focus more on action with storytelling presented in intermission screens instead. Those who are new, make sure to press F1 for help.

It has been a while since I posted, mainly being busy with making the mod and other stuff. But yeah, here is the new mod I made hope you enjoy!

I ran through the first three levels to try it out and, aside from a few props too offset and one of the candle sprites not making any light, it's pretty solid stuff overall. Love the use of textures and level geometry. It reminds me a bit to HoN, albeit with a more minimalist level design (not a bad thing). Health looks a bit scarce but that may be intentional because I was in Hard difficulty. Enemy density felt spot on, along with bestiary and weaponry. GJ there!

If I could suggest something, it'll be to add at least a color variant to the crossbowman, since it doesn't have any discernable distinction to the sword guy until shooting its projectile. Also, considering how dark are most of the indoor sections, all enemies could help having some brightmaps in their sprites. Btw, is there any recommended sector lighting config to go for in this? On a different note, I feel half of the secrets don't have proper hints. Aside from wall cracks and one flickering light, the rest expect the player to interact with something that looks exactly the same to a non-secret wall/prop, which doesn't ring well, tbf.

I had a weird bug with the chaingun replacement too: In the 2nd level, after picking it up, the message prompt said "You got the chaingun!" or something like that. When I selected another weapon, I couldn't re-select this new gun anymore, no matter if I used the key number or the scroll wheel. After picking it up once again in the 3rd level, the message read a different weapon name (that I can't recall but sounded like the proper name) and this time it worked correctly. I was able to de-select and re-select the weapon with no problems.

Finally, some minor nitpicks: The description in your revenant.txt seems to be from a different game and I couldn't find there either how many levels are supposed to be in this mod. Also, I'm not sure if this would qualify as a proper TC if there are assets from other doom/build engine games included. I may be wrong, tho.

So far, this mod looks pretty nice. Hope this feedback serves you well!

Did a little update that fixes the weapon replacement in MAP02, tweaked a texture or two for secret hints and the text file itself. Also thank you for the feedback!

It seems like half of weapon pickups in the 2nd map were screwed. I report that the SMG near the red key room works as intended now, but... now that I was able to get the secret rocket launcher, it gave me the same issue that had the SMG previously (not being able to re-select it after swapping up weapons). The secret SMG in the final courtyard is screwed too. Apparently, if you've picked up the properly working SMG already, this one soft-locks the rest of the weapons, making the player unable to select any other one. Also, it glitches:

I took a peek of your actors in Slade and doesn't seem to be any issue there (I didn't check thoroughly, though) so I guess the problem is in your map things.

Why are there three secrets in map 4 with literally nothing in them? :|
Spoiler:
And that door after the red key door that leads nowhere let you see the skybox in some angles, which seems unintentional:

I've read your post and fixed those issues even the missing door error which is now removed. And I thoroughly made sure every map secret has items and every weapon is the correct one. And I did small tweaks to certain maps like extra health and ammo. And I am embarrassed that I overlooked it, but that's okay. And also thanks for the feedback and spotting the bugs and errors.

No problem. Glad they're helpful!

So far I'm being able to 100% K/S, which means no more issues. That's it until map 11, though. There is a door west of the central teleporter which does not open, apparently soft-locking the player, since you can't go back after dropping down.
Spoiler: Here
Not game-breaking but there is a missing texture in one of the side walls in the last corridor.
Spoiler:
Also, in map 12 I couldn't lower the wall that leads to the secret yellow key. After spending an hour trying to figure it out fruitlessly, I checked said wall in UDB and it seems there's no linedef action or sector tag doing anything there. Did I miss an obscure script or is there no way to get inside? :-?

Fixed the bugs in MAP11 and MAP12 while also fixing minor issues in other maps and a new secret sound. In MAP15 a secret area has deep water bug that I cant fix, but it's a minor thing and probably just the engine itself.

I beat all twenty something levels (including three secret maps) with 100% K/S so I guess I can give my final thoughts already. As I said in my first comment, it's a pretty solid TC for the most part.
Spoiler: Pros
Spoiler: Cons
On a different note, I found myself with loads of ammo 90% of the time. Never got less than half in any ammo type. Maybe from pistol start or without finding any secret it would any another story but I don't play like that. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

But, yeah, that was it. Nice mod, man :thumb:
