The DOOM Tribute Project - GOLD EDITION (UPDATE: RC2 RELEASED!)

Post by Alando1 »

On March 29th, 2016, The DOOM Tribute Project was released... 10 years later, it has returned!
I present to you, The DOOM Tribute Project: GOLD EDITION!

After 10 years since its release, I've decided to do something special. It felt pretty cool to briefly return to this project, and it brought back a lot of good memories.

Here's what's new:
  • Contains a total of 42 levels!
  • Level lump names have been renamed to match their corresponding episode. They are now labeled as: D#M1-D#M5 (Secret levels are labeled as D#M6)
  • Original levels have been updated and rebalanced; some completely overhauled like Phobos Anomaly and The Mansion.
  • Each episode now has a secret level.
  • An additional level was added to episode 7; Blood Falls!
  • The secret levels are remakes/inspired versions of other Doom levels; New levels include: System Control, Delta Labs, Land of the Unholy, Resource Operations, Barrels O' Fun, Sewer-Side, & The Necropolis (Doom 2016 inspired).
  • New Icon of Sin boss battle.
  • Mod comes with a universal Weapon Mod compatibility patch that can be used for Brutal Doom, Project Brutality, and more!
  • New Alternate Music Pack add-on to rock out to while ripping and tearing those pesky demons; Music credits are located in the pk3 file itself; Separate download link below.

- Fixed/replaced some textures.
- Updated Weapon Mod Compatibility Add-on; Now compatible with more weapon/gameplay mods.
- Added new Add-on for continuous gameplay; Overrides pistol start sections of your adventure (i.e.: From E1 to E2 or E3 to E4)

Doom Tribute is one of my all time favorite experiences I've played with doom and now that it provides the option to play with any weapon mod, I'm excited to jump back in for a new playthrough. This is awesome, I've always wanted this.

So here's my initial thoughts based on playing episode one:

-You introduced me to Coldblight. I'm always looking for music to play with Doom and the optional PK3 you provided is awesome. :D
-I was enjoying the updates to episode 1. I like that the secret level is a reimagining of Evilution map 01. Kind of makes me wish Evilution and Plutonia got the Tribute Project treatment. :P
-I'm not a fan of forcefully resetting the player's inventory between episodes 1 and 2. I believe it should be the player's decision to either pistol start each episode or play continuously. As someone who prefers to play continuously, forcefully resetting my inventory kills my desire to play further. I realize this is likely a "me" thing though and that the WAD may not be for me as a result.

The universal weapon mod compatibility patch doesn't work for some other (non-BD) mods, for example Russian Overkill or Supercharge. You will see vanilla clip/cellpack (which serve no use) instead of appropriate replacements from the mod.

A better solution should be using RandomSpawner like this:

Code: Select all

actor DT_DPistolReplacer : RandomSpawner replaces Pistol2Pickup
{
    DropItem "Clip"
}

actor DT_RailgunReplacer : RandomSpawner replaces Railgun_DT
{
    DropItem "PlasmaRifle"
}

Hey guys, Thank you for the comments and feedback. Sorry if my response is a bit late.

@Nems - Thank you for your feedback. Believe it or not, I wanted to do a Final Doom Tribute Project, but unfortunately, I didn't have enough time or motivation for it. In fact, the TNT: Evilution Map 01 remake level was supposed to be part of it. I figured to not let that map go to waste and decided to put it into the DOOM Tribute Project - Gold Edition. In regards to the Continuous Gameplay, I could provide an add-on that swaps out the default system with a Continuous style of gameplay. One thing I wanted to do with the new and improved DOOM Tribute Project is to give players more freedom and versatility with the gameplay. As of right now, I've been gathering feedback from people so I can implement fixes or modifications to the RC2 release. If you do come across anything else, feel free to let me know :)

@NovaRain - Thank you for your feedback. I will definitely take you up on your recommendation :) I will implement that script into the RC2 release. Thank you!

I've started a replay of it tonight and this time I'm gonna play all the way through. :P If I come across anything of note I'll be sure to bring it up. :)

EDIT: Didn't want to make a double post but I played through the entirety of it and here are my thoughts:

-I really enjoyed the optional soundtrack. Makes me wish for a Coldblight music pack I could use with other wads. :P
-I appreciate access to the secret levels being cleverly hidden without being so difficult it would make me want to pull out the rest of my hair.
-Despite my personal distaste for inventory resets in wads, the resets in this were well-balanced! Tough without feeling overwhelming, if that makes sense. :)

I really enjoyed my time with it and I look forward to giving RC2 and beyond another playthrough to see if there's anything else I can add to my current thoughts. :>

Hey guys, RC2 of The DOOM Tribute Project has been released. Download link and Changelog are on the first post. Enjoy! :)

@Nems - Thank you for your feedback :) It was very helpful and I like your idea about the continuous gameplay. I put together an add-on that overrides the default MAPINFO, disabling the inventory resets. Thanks again, I really appreciate it.

Thank you again to everyone for their feedback. As always, if you guys find anything else that needs a little fixing, feel free to let me know :)

Didn't come across any issues during my RC2 run. The continuation patch worked like a charm. :)
