Re: what software do you use?
I suppose the question would be how do you want to make these sprites? Do you want to hand draw them or make them in 3D?

Blender is probably the most widely used since it's free and tutorials are abundant. There's also some excellent guides here for making sprites based from 3D renders using Blender.

I second using Blender, ever since they refreshed the UI in 2.80 it has become my favorite modeling software.. And it's free + open source! (I used 3DS Max and Maya in the past)

Re: what software do you use?
Personally, I find Blender's interface (both new and old) really obtuse and difficult to use. 3Ds Max, Maya, Cinema 4D all have much better, much more intuitive interfaces in my opinion. I was able to pick up those three and get something from them almost immediately. After many years of working with Blender, I still have to follow tutorials step-by-step to get something out of Blender, even when I have done the task many times before.
Of course, Blender is free and the others that I mentioned are (for most amateurs) prohibitively expensive. Some people really like the Blender interface though. Horses for courses. It certainly costs you nothing (except time) to try Blender.
