To be honest - other than competitive "fair play" in Multiplayer (good luck with that on an app with no built-in anti-cheat) there is really no reason to have this latched, other than "other games did it".
Valve source games (HL2 and later) don't even have this latched anymore.
I think the net arbitrator should be able to turn this on and off at will.
