My First Map [RELEASED]

Post by BlueFireZ88 »

I was originally planning on featuring this only in my mega wad "Living Nightmare" (and it still be a part of it), but I decided to release to the public to get opinions on my map making skills.

It's a very basic level that was originally used as a means of teaching myself how to use Doom Builder, and I ultimately finished it for Living Nightmare, though it may need tweaking.

Please leave constructive criticism as I may learn and improve, and hopefully get some tips to implement on the second map I'm working on, which will probably be released at a later date.

This map is way too short and is obviously just for you to learn how to map. I wouldn't release this for anything other than as a map for people to tell you how to improve. No one will really get much enjoyment out of it just because it's so short and simple. Here are my critiques:

1. The lift doesn't have a scrolling texture.
2. The back of the secret behind the blue key needs a door texture on the other side. It's also too thick imo.
3. There aren't enough enemies/its not hard enough.
4. The map isn't big enough, there should either be more needed to be done to get each key or the key battles should be more interesting.
5. One cool little set piece is if you have a teleport just infront of monsters when you open a door but also some to the side so when the are alerted some will teleport behind you but others will stay in front.
6. having a row of pinky demons behind the baron would stop players from being able to just avoid him entirely.
7. The secrets are all obvious.
8. Try making your joining halways bigger so the the map is larger.
9. Having some small height variation adds a bit of detail to the map. I'd recommend making the crushed floor 16 units small with a different floor texture.
10. I wouldn't try making a megawad at this stage. I think you need to make a whole bunch of varied/interesting small/medium sized maps just to get comfortable with mapping. That's the stage I'm at too.

That being said I did enjoy it because it reminds me of my old nice simple little maps and I can feel what you felt while making the map and I know how great it is when somebody plays your map. Keep on mapping :]

1.Fixed

2.Got door texture, wall's thinner, but made it so it opened only once. It's hard to escape the crusher trap if the door keeps closing on you.

3.Working on it.

4.Expanding the level, I am. First door with Blue Key is now a large room, and the secret hall with the chainsaw is no just a hallway connected to that room.
-Blue Door area extended with hallways and smaller rooms, still need to be work on though. Crusher room is longer and has more room to maneuver. More Demons too.
-Yellow Door will lead to an outdoor area before the room with the red key.

5.Not sure what you mean by that, but I'm thinking I can have monsters teleport into certain areas when you cross a certain linedef.

6.Check, added a second baron. Also fixed up the room with more textures, columns, and more room to move (thinking about making it bigger).

7.How so? Chaingun one is kind of meant to be. Chainsaw hall is no longer a secret.

8.Working on that one.

9.Yellow Door Outdoor area will have that. Also, the first room with the blue key now has it, but it needs to be adjusted.

10.The megawad in question is a compilation of some of the most famous and memorable maps of the original Doom/Ultimate Doom. Most of the maps are not mine, but only 2 I can claim will be featured as such. This obviously is meant to fix the first, and I will be releasing a beta of the other when Living Nightmare is closer to completion. Sorry for the confusion. This level is meant to be my signature for this pack.
