This occured after accidentally spawning a MarineBFG into a solid area, namely at the bottom of the starting ledge in Doom 2's MAP01, while playing on Nightmare with cheats enabled. At first I didn't notice there was a problem and he fired normally (though didn't hit anything -- the BFG impacted immediately). Once I got close to him to see if he could damage me, ZDoom bombed out with the above error.
