selling a game made in GZDOOM with ultimate doom builder?

Post by axxonn1 »

Hi everyone,
Since I was a kid, I've always loved to create Heretic wads on doom builder and dreamed that one day it could become my real job :D
Many time has passed and I started to be interested in game developpement. I recently discovered that there is a possibility of selling a game if you make it with GZDoom and ultimate doom builder but I have some questions about it.
I'm really sorry if my questions have obvious answers but I did a lot of researches and encountered a lot of different informations and I just want to be sure that I'll do everything legally.
As a french, it is also hard to understand technical english sometimes...

If I understood everything, in the GZDOOM folder I have to delete three files : game_support.pk3 file, brightmaps.pk3 and lights.pk3

Then I create my game (maps, assets and everything...)
And then I can distribute the game and sell it legally is that really everything you have to do ?

Also if anyone knows a great tutorial about how to export your gzdoom game into a Steam Ready executable file this would be awesome...
I'm used to doom builder but very new to slade, gzdoom and everything else...
I thank a lot everyone for the help and again... I'm very sorry If my post is annoying. Heretic and Doom are my passion since forever and I'm very inspired by projects like Selaco, Hands of necromancy and apocalyptic vibes...

The files you mentioned contain resources from the original games and are therefore the property of id software et al. So, you can't distribute them with your game. However, if you are making all your assets yourself anyway, you shouldn't need them. So, yes, you remove those files and provide your own resource files (usually in the form of your own IWAD or IPK3). I don't know the full legal technicalities (perhaps someone else can chip in?) but I'm sure that's the gist of it.

As for getting the game on Steam, or elsewhere, I have no idea.

Thanks a lot for your answer !
Yes indeed, I'm have a lot of respect for the original games and all the work of the community and that's why I want to be sure to do the right thing :D
You bring me hope and I hope that someone in this forum know about the legal technicalities. Maybe I should ask the Selaco dev team

in the 1990s there were add-on packages like d!zone and demongate that were sold commercially even though they required doom-games made by other companies in order to function. you can pretty much [attempt to] sell anything as long as you made it yourself*, though presumably going through steam requires that it be able to run on its own without external resources.

*or only ripped off people who do not have effective copyright protections, or maybe even if they do if you have good enough lawyers, but that is hopefully beside the point.

Fun fact: I bought one of those shovelware collections from the local video game store (long enough ago that the files were spanned across a few floppies, not a CD). When I got home and tried the WADs, I found I'd paid good money for a collection that included some of my own stuff. Presumably, they'd been scraped off the CompuServe Action Games Forum (where most people were uploading stuff at the time) and included on the disks - without any text files or credit included with them.

Long ago I had a particular cd, and really liked one of the shoveled wads, but I lost contact with the disc at some point, and years later wanted to find the wad again but couldn't remember its name. I even started a thread here making the absurd request that if anyone else has the cd if they could send me a file listing so I could try to figure out what the wad was. Eventually i found that most of those "collections" were on archive.org, and downloaded a bunch, and determined that what I sought was some version of NJDOOM, eventually revealed to have been made by you. No thanks to the text file, though, which was, indeed, not included.

and it has just struck me that i made that thread maybe 10 years after playing the wad but i made this allusion 20 years after making the thread. I am surprised to be this old. I distinctly remembered the creepy sp_face graphic repurposed in the sky3, and I should have just asked if anybody knew of a wad where that had been done and simplified the matter and maybe actually have gotten the answer, but hindsight is 20-20 years, as they say.
