[WIP] Wolfenstein: Definitive Legacy Alpha v0.9.1

Post by JUSSOMONE »

Greetings everyone, after more or less 2 years of working on this mod, I've finally decided it's time to launch it publicly... And so comes to this: Wolfenstein definitive legacy alpha v0.9.1

Initially I sought to maintain it for myself, but since I went too far, it was pretty obvious to me that others might like it, especially wolfenstein fans. Inspired by the likes of Metadoom, Nazis!, Wolfendoom and a bunch of wolfenstein 3d mods, I thought and saw the reality of the few mods there are for Doom regarding the Wolf3D universe, and with good reason: It was very repetitive in gameplay and less impactful compared to Doom and its legacy, therefore, to somewhat even the field a bit, this mod should be at least interesting for those seeking "the odd one out", but without going so far as to say "too odd" or "impractical".

As such, it seemed a good idea to pick and mix it up what each of the 3 wolfenstein games had to offer: Wolfenstein 3D for being what it is (including damage falloff), Return to Castle Wolfenstein for realism regarding weapons and uniforms. And finally the Reboot series with its upgrades, perk system, some weapons and sound effects. The overall mod explanation can be found within its manual for anyone interested or needing directions in regards to its gameplay features

Expect it to be somewhat difficult, since it tries to replicate some of the original wolfenstein mechanics, such as damage falloff and for being more semi-tactical oriented, if you play it patiently, you will soon get the hang of it.

Image Features

.Damage falloff, not punishing like the original wolfenstein, but more fair with a linear function.
.Ledge climbing ability. (courtesy of Dodopod, really thanks!)
.Ammo making, scrap and armor salvaging abilities.
.3 skill sets that complements each other: Strength, Defense and Logistic. Play according to your style!
.3 unique experimental weapons awarded according to your skill level.
.Somewhat accurate enemy uniforms and army forces to distinguish themselves. (Wehrmacht Feldgrau uniform, Waffen-ss grey with black gloves and SS black uniform and white gloves)
.Random and dynamic bunker spawn compatible with any map.
.Progressive leveling with stronger enemy variants as you level up. (E.g.: Waffen-ss starts appearing at level 5 and SS at level 10)
.Custom enemy health bar indicating its tier and boss type.
.Fully hand drawn weapons including their reloading animations.
.Powerup remaining time indicator on screen.
.Reworked some AI logic: movement, aggressiveness, max target range, etc.
.And many others...

Alpha v0.9.0 -> https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing
Alpha v0.9.1 -> https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing

YOU WILL NEED AT LEAST GZDOOM v4.14.0 FOR THE MOD TO WORK PROPERLY!

Image Final considerations

Most of it I've already said at the end of the manual, but as an emphasis, credits are found in a separate .txt file, you for (possibly) playing it, all of Wolf3D/WolfenDoom community by keeping the torch alight and for all of ID Software work on the original working titles.

And please... Take into consideration the mod is still in it's alpha stages so changes are definitely going to happen in the future. Thanks, that's all.

Stay tunned for future content and happy gaming! :thumb:

Nice mod, lots of little details I appreciate like the hats and helmets flying off.

I think the enemies are a bit spongey, sometimes it takes about half a mag to kill and ammo is a bit more scarce, and especially at the start when your accuracy is pretty poor (unless firing in bursts) then you have to get in close, but getting close is a death sentance.
The snipers are way overtuned in my opinion, being gibbed from 100 health is a bit extreme, it's like they're all xaero from quake 3 lol. (they don't react that quickly though)

Its hard, I assume you're going for a challenging experience with some realism there but the spongey enemies make the difficulty feel a bit artificial.

Anyway, just my thoughts, I think what you have so far is excellent and I'm curious to see how it develops. Thanks for the mod!

*sigh* my fault...playing doom/wolfenstein like mods for years makes you have a tendency to "not seeing the other side of things". I too also find it very difficult... lmao

ok, in the respective order:

1º: The thing from enemies being spongey is due to distance related damage, as you get closer to them, the higher the damage (for you and the opponents), although I may have gone too far in regards to panzergrenadiers...as they appear a lot in most megawads --PROBABLY WILL BE TWEAKED-- P.S.: Did the enemies you've fought had a little officer cap icon above them? if so, it means there are officers nearby and they can buff enemy health (double to be precise).

2º: I really couldn't decide about this one, or they were going to do the same damage as the player, or be inferior and break the semi-realistic premise...also, when you say gibbed, does the player explode (XDeath)? I've explicitly programmed it so it wouldn't gib. P.S.: I just saw here, they can gib, yet, it's almost impossible due to the highest damage being 99 and for the player to gib, needs to be 101 --PROBABLY WILL BE TWEAKED--

3º: Yes, I might forgot to explain the mod has a "Semi-realistic premise" --PROBABLY WILL BE ADDED IN CASE OF FORGETFULNESS--

Thanks for the feedback and support! As mentioned in the main topic, it's still in the Alpha phase, so changes will definitely happen, until then, happy gaming!

Yeah, as a side note, I am also having trouble beating it (a lot of quick-loads lol)

I will definitely going to tweak the damage and other properties to make it more plausible.

so i dowload the 0.9.1 and i play the entire day and have something to say

1. maybe change the color of the menu text (the gray one) make it more dark or more light, cuz its hard to read with the title backgroun
2. i think the damage changes fells good (still hard but not so hard)
3. i will like a hud like the final doomer ones, but its not one of your plans don't give it any importance
4. the alt hud needs some tweaks like the power up timers (the screen shot)

aside from that, the mod feels and looks good, the wapons have so good desing and I'm really looking forward to future updates and what you have planned for the mod.

(thanks for the good work and sorry if i wrote something wrong)

Just passing by to say that I've been working hard on the mod, I've just finished doing some enemies reloading animations and implemented the "enemy dropped ammo accordingly to what they had left before death".

I just ask for patience for anyone interested in news as I am very compromised with real life things at the moment to give much attention, thanks in advance.

I will probably until the end of October, post the mod on ModDB to increase visibility, hope you bunch are having fun with the mod!

If only someone would make total conversion mods and overhaul the Wolfendoom-based mods for better compatibility with gameplay mods. Similar to Doom CE.

The first is planned, as I do intend to make a TC featuring elements from each of the 3 main wolf games: the 3D from 1992, RTCW and the reboot series. But it's still pretty far in the development quota, as I still need to finish infantry covering system (doing it at this very moment), SS firing while moving, enemy taking cover from grenades or throwing them back, and mainly, a graphic and overhaul implementation of the weapons, as I do have in mind akimbo pistols and smg's, plus weapon mods to make them more tactical and interesting.

about the "Wolfendoom-based mods", it greatly depends on the original developers of these mods as some of them like Brutal wolfenstein, were made with one idea in mind with a not-so-reliable-code that will possibly mess up other mods or the mod itself. Unfortunately this one apparently won't happen.

You could see some simpler mods that don't tinker much with programming and more map geometry and textures like Laz Rojas wolfendoom series Arctic Wolf, these ones would certainly benefit with WDL.

Hi there, I am really grateful that you are liking it, and probably more as from what i replied to JPC. I think until only at the near end of this month I will be uploading v0.9.5. Since I need to solve some affairs I've been having lately from life. :?

P.S.: I also noticed this hud timer question, in the next release it will be revised.
