Question about buying music
Title says otherwise, If I buy music and add them to my mod (And if I upload that mod here in the forums at some point), Is it still considered illegal because someone else gets it for free?

Re: Question about buying music
You don't buy the license. You just buy a copy of the song, so yes, it's still illegal.

Yep. You need permission from the artist and record label.. and most of the time, they want tons of cash. Look for royalty-free music from Google.

Re: Question about buying music
I get why he can't use it legally, but honestly who is ever going to stumble upon it in a Doom mod and actually do anything about it? The chances are slim to none I would say at this point. What I'd do is make the mod with free stuff and then make your own sub-mod for yourself with the music you want just to avoid this kind of thing.

Re: Question about buying music
I think it's the same with 3dRealms, Monolith and a lot of other game-companies: The doom-community has been using graphics and sounds from their games till this day. But for a company, it's not worth sueing a single person if they don't even loose any profit because of him.
Although it might be different for music, because you basically deliver the entire creation of the artist in your mod without his permission.

Re: Question about buying music
I wouldn't risk it. Some artists or right holders may not really care but you never can be sure that you have to deal with one who actually does.

Graf summed it up the best. Some artists and labels don't care. Then you got a few who has a hair across their ass and just need to sue everyone.

Re: Question about buying music
Thing is, I found some good music from audionetwork.com, secretly downloaded them without a dime to spend. But I can't tell if this site would seem to care about sueing you than most famous music artists you hear today.

Re: Question about buying music
Consider using music from the Newgrounds Audio Portal or Incompetech.com - those are sources where downloading and using the songs are almost entirely free, with the only condition being that you have to give credit to the artists in a visible place.
