[WIP] Starbound: Golden Lights

Post by Kate »

Story
In an odd dream, Ness is pulled into some kind of portal which leads to a strange planet, where the inhabitants resemble toys and the atmosphere is bright and happy. Unfortunately, this atmosphere is suddenly interrupted by a bright star falling from the sky, and crash-landing in a terrifyingly powerful explosion, quickly decimating what would've seemed to be a small abandoned town a few hundred yards away. A small pink puffball is seen struggling to get out of the man-made crater that the star had created not long after that. Ness, seeing this, runs over to help.

Kirby, who was traveling between planets on his Warp Star, was pulled into the gravitational field of some sort of black hole. When forced out of the other side, he lost control of the star which plunged uncontrollably toward the nearest planet of a foreign solar system that he has never before seen, which consisted of 3 planets all connected to each other by rainbow tunnels which created a giant ring around a single white star, like some sort of magical space station.

Unable to redirect his course, he held on tight and braced for impact. The star spun and shifted in zig zags rapidly as it entered the atmosphere, soon aiming straight for a small empty town just ahead of him. At the last possible moment, the star lost all power and simply dropped like a bomb. In a split second, Kirby let go as the star dug into the ground, then exploded, leaving a giant hole in the middle of the town's square. After a brief stunned moment, the star-wielding adventurer forced himself off the ground, and climbed out of the crash site.

Only then did he realize, that his Star Rod was missing, and without that, he was unable to summon another Warp Star to leave the planet. A confused human figure carrying a baseball bat in a small backpack then approached from the rocks several hundred yards away, wondering what had happened.

And with that, a brand new adventure starts.

So what is this?
Starbound is a (soon to be standalone) modification for ZDoom that takes place in the Dimension LXXII universe, unifying both elements from the Kirby and Earthbound series games. It is planned to feature fast action in the style of the Kirby games with new missions and scenarios, and new challenges in the form of simple puzzles that unravel an even bigger picture for what is a relatively simple storyline. You can select to play either Kirby or Ness which have unique styles of play, or a semi-hidden third character that joins together the powers of both to create something completely different.

Screenshots
Sorry, just one of an area that will change - I have no enemies or things implemented yet as this is still in very, very early stages. This will change as I get more done.
Spoiler: Level 1: Walkways
I will post updates as more is finalized.

Anyway, I hope you'll have controllable PSI and be able to get abilities from enemies. Also, I'm calling the third person is a stylized doom guy. :P

I knew someone was going to mention that. Well both games are completely wacky in their own unique ways so it kinda makes sense, at least to me, that they would wind up together at least once. =p

Both will be present. Kirby can inhale enemies as in the original games to gain powers as well as the ability to shield himself from attacks like in Kirby Super Star, and will have a few weapons like the Hammer, and Star Rod as well as some entirely new ones. Ness will be able to learn all sorts of abilities and call any of them at any time like teleportation, summoning different types of objects and various forms of attack and defense, as well as custom weapons that work in strange ways like sine wave guns that emit fully controlled speaker blasts or flash bulbs that scare enemies when used.

The classic Microphone and Lollipop items will also make an appearance.

Doom guy wouldn't fit in this at all. Well, maybe he would if I chibi-tized him and stuck him with non-violent weapons =p

=p The third character is 100% original so it will be impossible to guess who or what it is.

The third character is a genetic clone who resulted in fusion between Ness and Kirby's DNA which was created by the two governing factions in an effort to control Pop Star and all other spatial bodies.

Oh hey, another question: Will Ness have the Earthbound hud that you showed on a video before, and Kirby have a Superstar-styled one? It's be cool to see your current ability. Kirby having weapons are fine if they have limited uses to make sure you use ability alot. Or shooting stars that were previously enemies in your mouth. :P

1: Yes, it will. 2: Possibly. Currently they both use the same hud but with different colors, as in the screenshot, Kirby's is yellow and the power roller to the right changes depending on the character in use, but that may change so that it includes health and ammo bars and full size ability icons on Kirby's hud so they can easily be told apart. Ability icons are a must so they'll find their way in one way or another. =p

Yeah, weapons also count as their own abilities so you can only have one at a time and you need to drop them to use another ability or weapon. There's just one glaring exception to this rule that I decided to make, and that's the Star Rod. Once you possess it, you can always switch between it regardless of what abilities you already have, instead of replacing your current ability, and you may never drop it once you have acquired it.

The reason I decided to do this is that your Star Rod's alternate attack is the ability to summon the Warp Star, which you will need to traverse through parts of the level that cannot be crossed on foot. Both flight and abilities are a must here as it's primary attack is a short ranged powerful explosive star that eats up a hefty amount of Star Power, so limitting to just the Star Rod alone as in the original games is quite bad as you can drain yourself of Star Power in a very short time and requires you to get up close, rendering Kirby rather useless at a large distance.

It's got some green, but it wouldn't really fit with the yellow/pink lemonade theme at the moment.

Wait, what? What do I know about all this?

You don't seem to see the little blue thing.
