Umm... the barons most definitely classify as a boss battle.

Big... room designed just form them... last thing you encounter... haven't seen them before... much harder than anything else...

Like I said, it's a difference of perspective. I do concede the point that it could be considered a boss battle and perhaps even intended as one; however, in my mind, Barons of Hell are regular monsters, and therefore do not qualify as a "boss".

It depends entirely on the context. Within Doom episode 1, Barons defininitely qualify as bosses. That status doesn't really change throughout all of Doom 1 - you rarely encounter more than 1 or 2 of them at a time, though certain E4 levels are an exception. Doom 2's what lowers their status, what with a dozen or so of them in map08 alone
.
However, in certain wads (Hell Revealed 1 & 2, Cyerdreams, etc), even the Cyberdemon doesn't qualify as a full boss, because there are just so many of them!
